Klonoa breezes through DEATH BATTLE!

(NOTE: Before we begin, spoilers to the entire Klonoa series will obviously be included in this blog. So if you plan to play the Phantasy Revier series as his background will cover both Klonoa 1 and 2 do beware. And to quickly note this off despite being set in an alternate universe, Klonoa Heroes will also be included in this blog to expand and explain some of Klonoa's more unknown abilities and equipment. So while not the same timeline consider this a sort of composite :D)

Background

(“It’s strange… sometimes I can't remember my dreams, though I'm sure I saw them. Where do these dreams go?”)

Have you ever wondered…. What happens to dreams once you forget them? Where did they go? Why does one feel this way if they can't remember? one of these answers perhaps may lie in the world of Phantomile. A place composed of 4 kingdoms where the energy of people’s forgotten dreams are gathered and give shape to the world by Cress, The mythical Moon Kingdom.

In the first kingdom, the wind village of Breezegale. There Klonoa lived with his grandfather, until Klonoa found a strange ring that fell from the sky, and it turned out that when he pulled out the ring contained a green spirit by the name of Huepow. As a result of Klonoa helping him, the two soon would form a great bond and become best friends.

One day a ship fell over Bell Hill just exactly like in his dream. Their investigation led them to find out that a Dark Lord called Ghadius kidnapped the songstress Lephise who could renew the world of Phantomile, and planned to seek out a magical pendant named the Moon Pendant for his own means of revenge for all of Phantomile. Klonoa beforehand found this pendant first hidden on the same Bell Hill and left it with his grandfather.

But unfortunately, tragedy unexpectedly struck for the poor kid. As one of Ghadius underlings Joka, overheard it’s location was in Klonoa's house before Klonoa could get back there, and so as a big F you for previously thwarting his plans killed his grandfather by nuking his house and stealing the pendant for himself. Leaving Klonoa mourning for him as he slowly died in his arms, jesus.

This would simply just kickstart a chain of events where Klonoa would slowly uncover as to what his true role was, after Klonoa had a payback and beat Joka. Huepow would reveal that he was a prince on the guise of a spirit to hide from Ghadius, who after now being defeated awoke a dream eating entity by the name of Nahatomb with the pendant. Both Klonoa and Huepow certainly didn’t go unscathed when fighting him, but eventually with their combined teamwork and the power of the 4 kingdoms they defeated the beast. The then worn out Huepow then told Klonoa that they’d “always be together.”

Or would they?

Klonoa would soon learn the tragic truth that Huepow held. He began to tell him that his previous childhood memories of his first meeting with him were simply false memories created by Huepow when he summoned Klonoa as the Dream Traveller, destined to always save endangered worlds. And so since his duty was done, he would now be forcibly pulled back to his own world due to Lephise’s Song of Rebirth making everything go back to the way it was.

Understandably, Klonoa was upset and didn’t simply want to believe his previous life was a lie, so he refused to leave. But the portal then began to pull him back into his own world and Huepow tried to desperately help him since he still felt a sense of friendship from his adventures, yet even with his help Klonoa was pulled into the portal and in a blink, he was gone.

Years later, Klonoa would be called yet again by a mysterious voice begging him for help in another world. Falling from a portal into the sea in Lunatea where he’d meet and be saved by Lolo, a priestess apprentice and Popka, her dog sidekick. Both of whom would lead Klonoa to a tower housing a bell, upon ringing the bell Lolo would become a full fledged priestess.

They then led for Klonoa to meet Baguji, the mysterious prophet who foretold The Dream Traveller’s arrival as told by a legend. Who informed them that there were four bells spread across the kingdoms of Lunatea(of Tranquility, Discord, Joy and Indecision), until a fifth one appeared to spread Sorrow to those around it. They set out to ring each bell and obtain its elements, to contain the evil of the mysterious fifth bell.

Throughout his journey to get every element, Klonoa and company encountered and endured all sorts of threats that stood in their way. Saving several of the kingdoms from destruction, constantly fighting sky pirates like Leorina and Tat that sought Klonoa’s ring, and facing the Old Tree’s test. Where Klonoa and Popka helped a depressed Lolo get over her personal struggles and gain confidence on herself after seeing the visions of her past in the Maze of Memories and defeat the monster sent after them, as she thought that she wasn’t qualified to save the world as it was Klonoa who really rang the first bell. This undying determination to help others from the heroes in turn impressed the Old Tree enough to earn them the fourth element.

With all elements gathered they returned them to Baguji, however, this “Baguji” was in reality a disguised Leorina as the real one was gone. With all elements Leorina planned to use it to spread sorrow, aiming to make everyone on Lunatea feel the same depression she went through as a priestess. Using all of the elements she opened the gateway to connect Lunatea to the Kingdom of Sorrow by summoning a giant wooden arc and was consumed by Sorrow the moment she used her replica Wind Ring, Klonoa soon defeated the mutated Leorina. Realizing that she was basically manipulated into using the elements, the two teamed up to stop it. But it was unfortunately too late, as the destroyed arc still had finally made its full course and the kingdom arose from the ground to spread Sorrow.

With some time still left, Leorina realized the only way to stop it was to defeat the very source of this castle; Klonoa soon climbed his way up through the kingdom. At the top of this tower, he would meet the mysterious voice who had been begging The Dream Traveller for help since the very beginning of this journey. The King of Sorrow.

As it turns out, the real Baguji was in reality merely an illusion created by The King of Sorrow in order to manipulate Klonoa, Popka and Lolo with false prophecies. This fifth kingdom was always technically a part of Lunatea, but everyone’s rejection to feel and forget Sorrow made him and the kingdom disappear. Feeling rejected, he wanted to make everyone remember it; so he summoned Klonoa and manipulated everyone to gather every element. The two then fought, and Klonoa eventually won out in the end. In his last moments, Klonoa comforted the King of Sorrow and assured him that he didn’t have to run anymore as nobody in Lunatea would ever forget Sorrow from this moment on. The king passed with a smile and turned into the last element.

(Klonoa 2 - Farewell Again)

With Lunatea saved, Lolo knew it would be his time for Klonoa to go back to his own world as his quest was done. Being taught from Klonoa through their journey it’s okay to cry and feel sadness, Lolo cried and hugged Klonoa one last time before he departed. Klonoa then quoted the words that a dear friend told him once, even though he may leave this world so long as Lolo doesn’t forget the sadness of this moment. They’ll “always be together.”

Finally accepting his role as the Dream Traveller and the sorrow of his past departure, Klonoa walked away with a simple smile through a portal to go back home. Awaiting for the next moment he would be called to aid those in need.

Equipment

Wind Ring

Klonoa’s primary weapon throughout the entire series, supposedly said to be a sacred item. With the aid of someone else like Huepow or a priestess like Lolo who act as the power source, Klonoa can fire a blast of wind called Wind Bullet. Resulting in the enemy inflating like a balloon and Klonoa picking them up, then throwing them to whatever direction he wants. He can also use those enemies to be able to perform a double jump mid-air, or use it in more creative ways by utilizing the environment around him. Such as: being propelled as a bolt of lightning by an Erbil to fly at even further altitude and destroy crates, absorb enemies with a Likuri and open crystal gateways, or fly around with a Kiton.

His wind ring also doesn’t exclusively work on just living beings, in the manga it has somehow shown to inflate bullets, rocks or even entire houses. Implying even the slightest contact with a Wind Bullet can make anything inflate. Additionally he can combine his powers with the one acting as the power source and fire them as a massive blast of wind(though this is used as a last resort and can tire them out.)

Hoverboard

A rental board stolen by Popka, which allows Klonoa to travel over snow or water and do a lot of sick tricks. By building enough speed, Klonoa can make the board go fast enough to ram into enemies.

Dive Suit

Due to Klonoa’s own Aquaphobia. He uses a special suit to allow him to travel underwater and even space, which can also use the same weapons that Klonoa can use on land.

Wind Blade

Klonoa can seemingly manipulate the wind from his same ring to create a blade made out of wind, allowing him to slash through enemies with two wide swings. Though using it may leave him open to counter-attacks.

Wind Hammer

With this great hammer Klonoa can create explosions on impact, making it capable of damaging and break through the defenses from shield wielding enemies.

Wind Parasol

The Wind Parasol allows Klonoa to create a shield of wind, making him able to render most enemy projectiles useless.

Boomerang

A multi-hitting Boomerang that Klonoa can control around the battlefield thanks to his wind abilities.

Crash Ball

Dual hand-cannons which allow Klonoa to shoot spiked balls.

Items

Throughout his adventure on Klonoa Heroes, Klonoa discovers a variety of items hidden in treasure chests that he can use. These include:

  • Badges: Klonoa and others can equip badges which can up and down their stats.

  • Instant Ramen: Can recover most of Klonoa’s HP.

  • Sandals: Can now walk on more dangerous terrain like spikes with ½ damage.

  • Memo Note: By writing on a paper, Klonoa can remember various of his moves. Gives full amnesia immunity.

  • Claire’s Tag: A tag of the goddess Claire, gives 50% immunity to Curses.

  • Vaccine: A syringe which gives him a full immunity to poisons.

  • Time Firefly: With the aid of a firefly, Klonoa can briefly stop time for a total of 5 seconds. This time can be extended by 1.5x with a Time Firefly Seal

  • Angel Ring: Revives Klonoa with full health once if he is to ever die, but only once.

Abilities

Limited Floating

By jumping and flapping his ears, Klonoa can briefly float on air. Though in the remake, Klonoa has shown to hover and fly around(likely due to being in space)

Double Wind Bullet Tornado

By letting both Huepow and Lolo reside in the Wind Ring, the two can combine their power to allow Klonoa to fire a more powerful version of his wind bullet.

Tornado Attack

A move taught while training under Balue to become strong to beat Guntz. This allows him to briefly fly in air as he creates a spiral of swirling tornadoes around him to damage his enemies. In Klonoa Beach Volleyball, he instead creates the tornado by hitting the Volleyball hard enough and making every opposing player in it be caught on the Tornado upon impact.

Thunder Hurricane

As he felt he wasn’t yet a strong enough hero to defeat Joka, he trained again with Balue and developed an entirely new technique inspired after being electrocuted of ALL things. Klonoa then begins to spin like crazy as bolts of lightning fall to strike his enemies.

Feats

Overall

(“Lolo… I may leave this world… But we’ll always be together. I believe that if you don’t forget the sadness of this moment, we’ll always be… together. Okay? So…. Lolo? Thanks for everything.”)

  • Defeated Joka, Ghadius, Nahatomb(like literally three times), Leorina and The King of Sorrow

  • Won the Dream Champ Tournament and stopped Garlen’s plans, making him the greatest hero

  • Won a Beach Volleyball tournament

  • Recovered all moon fragments and made all the artists who stole them in the first place change their ways, returning the moon to its place.

  • Rung all five elements of Lunatea, and passed the Test of the Bell of Indecision

  • Saved the Kingdom of Julius and made its ruler allow dreams again

  • In Klonoa Heroes, Klonoa and the rest of the crew are unaffected by the planet wide sleep waves from Nahatomb.

Weaknesses

- As powerful and brave as Klonoa may be, it should still be noted that Klonoa at his very core is still a naive child and so sometimes may be a bit too gullible for his own good. This is how more experienced foes like Guntz have tricked him several times into several traps, or how Klonoa in several games has been tricked into doing the bidding of antagonists like Bagoo or The King of Sorrow.

-Klonoa has a fear of falling into water and is completely useless on water without the aid of something like a Dive Suit.

-Additionally, his ring requires someone to act as the power source in order to be able to work. Though there have been some times where Klonoa has used it without someone inhabiting it(Dream Champ Tournament and Klonoa Heroes), regardless it still ultimately has a finite source and will wear them out.

Suggested Opponents

NiGHTS

Probably my favorite option for Klonoa, not only does NiGHTS into Dreams share a lot of similar aesthetics to Klonoa. But I think it focuses the most on Klonoa’s role from what I've seen of gameplay, similarly NiGHTS protects dreams by warding off invading Nightmarens, whether it’s in the land of dreams or in someone else’s mind. Since NiGHTS is also trapped in a small building by dualizing(basically uniting into one) with a visitor from the Real World, they can become NiGHTS to fight.

Animation wise, instead of weapons. NiGHTS primarily utilizes flight, drilling through Nightmarens and such. You may think this seems a bit awkward at first, but Klonoa has fought enemies with flight before so it’s not particularly new to him. NiGHTS also has a wide variety of transformations depending on the environment they’re traveling on(ranging from a Roller Coaster to Dolphins to a Dragon!)

Sora

Another personal favorite of mine since I've played the KH series early this year, two kids who watch over and save endangered worlds from the darkness by utilizing special weapons that require another individual(linking with Ventus’s heart and using Huepow/Lolo to power the ring) to use. It’s simple but I think it works!

Now for the animation potential, I think there's a lot of ways you could take this mu. One of the ones I like the most is the Wind Sword vs Keyblade clash, the wind sword is already designed sort of like a keyblade already so it makes even more sense. Also while Sora has lots of magic i feel Klonoa’s weapons like his Parasol, Boomerang and how Klonoa uses the environment with the Wind Ring to his favor should let him get by enough. One other idea I also really liked is adding their mates(Goofy and Donald vs Guntz and Pango) as a 3v3 to help spice up things.

Rayman

Though it’s Klonoa’s most popular match, nowadays I think it’s something that I'm a bit mixed on. I personally wanna like it since I really like both characters and it could make for a fun animation. But lack of thematics or narrative relevance in the pairing(Such as the Dream Warriors connection, which is way more focused in Klonoa’s case than Rayman’s.) make me not like it as much as his other options.

Even with my problem on the lack of thematics regardless, I think it still has good qualities with its animation potential and music potential(Rayman Origins music slaps). Rayman with no equipment throughout most of his games is a more punchy character, using his fist like a projectile or to beat the crap out of someone. But has very weird equipment like the various costumes in GBA Raving Rabbids giving him all sorts of powers, like freezing people or bubblegums????? very cool though.

Tidus

Since a friend brought this up to me it’s been interesting. And i’ve been playing FFX more recently and it’s been surprisingly thematic this one and line in both is. Two kind and young dream travelers themed around elements(Wind, Water) who find out that both don’t exist in their world and disappear once their journey is over, go on a journey alongside a girl from a religious occupation(Yuna for Tidus, Lolo for Klonoa) to save the world that they get romantically involved with. There’s more but that’s the gist of it.

Animation wise, while Tidus’s may seem a bit versatile from everything that he gets in his Sphere Grid from elemental magic to his Overdrives. Klonoa’s abilities and weapons can match Tidus’s weapons and magic, from using similar magic like time stop magic/healing items to Wind/Electric attacks. Tidus is also player dependent more than any other playable FF main character due to how flexible the Sphere Grid is, so you can choose any magic or ability for him to use in the animation.
