Klonoa, Namco’s Dream Traveller.
NiGHTS, SEGA's Shadow Jester of Dreams.
Dreams and nightmares are in many ways, a reflection of the many sides of our selves as we drift into the unconscious boundary of the real and surreal. Showing us both what we both want and don't want to accept. But in times of crisis, these two dream warriors prove that so long as we have the courage and determination to keep trying and face our anxieties head on, anyone can accomplish their dreams and become their true self.
So when we pit these two head on, will Klonoa's heroics make the dream end for NiGHTS? or will NiGHTS’s antics loop Klonoa's victory into nothing more than a crazy pipe dream? Let’s find out in a… DEATH BATTLE!
Before we begin…
So to set some ground rules, due to the often vague and abstract nature of when it comes to both of these combatants and their series it’s not a surprise there can be differences in how certain writers and creatives decide to interpret them.
For Klonoa: we’ll be focusing on a soft composite while keeping a degree of separation between certain continuities. His main duology of games alongside his other adventures on the GBA/PS1/Wonder Swan spin-offs by the original Klonoa team, as well as interviews and the original japanese manuals related to those games that will be prioritized over US/UK manuals unless localized versions remain consistent to the Japanese. Other side-mediums such as the WII manga, the Noctis Sol comic and the 4komas will be used as support, as some of these contain certain lore that were scrapped due to lack of time such as the resurrection of Klonoa’s grandpa or were originally from guidebooks like the Mirror Spirit story. They even include the participation of actual series artist Yoshihiko Arai in its prologue.
When it comes to Klonoa Heroes, it’s entirely fair to feel particularly iffy about its inclusion considering some pretty blatant contradictions to the mainline games. Such as the game merging settings between Lunatea/Phantomille in a single planet despite being originally separate worlds or his relationship with certain characters being changed from Lolo being his childhood friend to him not knowing Guntz whatsoever. However, per Yoshihiro Arai’s words, while the game might not have much of a relation at first… it is still considered a genuine title of the Klonoa series that follows on the themes of the games preceding it and even readapts events from them, as a sort of ultimate culmination of the Klonoa series and Klonoa Beach Volleyball does mention later plotlines from it like Guntz’s dead father, which in the Noctis Sol comic is shown to be among the many dream adventures Klonoa took. And anyways, Arai regularly had this kind of attitude with not wanting to be stuck to a singular setting for past games and accepting other interpretations, so he’s not particularly picky about canon. So for these reasons, we can at least assume it’d be close and safe enough for a soft composite.
For NiGHTS: We’ll be focusing on their two games, alongside the storybook that came packaged with special editions of the game while prioritizing the Japanese manuals, interviews and websites over some of the early weirder US lore from SEGA of America came up with which contradicts later NiGHTS media. But will bring it up for some of NiGHTS’s Archie Comics, which stick more closely to the localized western lore. And speaking of the devil, if you’re in the know about NiGHTS, it’s very clear that Archie’s miniseries aren't very accurate to Yuji Naka and Takashi Iizuka’s vision of NiGHTS with how they choose to adapt the original story of the game with certain details such as Wizeman’s motivation to ascend to the Waking World as opposed to just wanting to destroy Nightopia for being its opposite in the original Japanese. Regardless, we’ll decide to include it as its own specific continuity that won’t affect specific feats from the games.
And to clear up doubts whether NiGHTS’s crossovers with Sonic are valid the answer is… maybe? When everyone's favorite series writer that everyone absolutely loves – Ian Flynn and his co–host Kyle Crouse got confronted with the question of NiGHTS being canon on their Q&A they said that they could very much see them in the same place fine enough and that this interpretation could very much be valid. Though Ian does worry that this could alienate NiGHTS fans if it was made part of Sonic. There’s also a fair amount of things that could indicate that Sonic and NiGHTS do share continuities. For example in Christmas NiGHTS, another game developed by Sonic Team, there’s a special level where Sonic ends up in Nightopia and Yuji Naka does imply that he could have gotten there by sleeping, and this is actually consistent. In Sonic Lost World’s DLC, The Nightmare Zone: a few websites and interviews for the lead-up to this new level similarly say that Sonic after sleeping also got pulled into a world of nightmares by Wizeman.
Crossover games were also made with the intention of maintaining the spirit of NiGHTS. Sonic Riders has NiGHTS’s profiles in the website for Sonic Riders and Zero Gravity retreads on their original bios from NiGHTS’s Japanese manual. SEGA and Takashi Iizuka were also incredibly supportive of the development process of Sonic All-Stars Racing and provided much of the drawing concepts to keep NiGHTS accurate to their original game (which is why we have Car NiGHTS). Showing what they could and couldn’t do while consulted. For example, they couldn’t depict Nightopia being corrupted into a Nightmare version as there is always a clear disconnect between the two worlds or mix elements from NiGHTS Into Dreams and Journey of Dreams to keep the games separate. We even got a neat little story on how NiGHTS got to participate in the tournament as well.
So for all intents and purposes it’s fair to include NiGHTS’s crossovers here since they have active creator involvement and are implied by lore. Though whether or not they’ll pan out for scaling is something else…
Background
Klonoa
(“Wahoo!”)
Where do forgotten dreams go? For as long as he can remember being born, Klonoa of the wind village always felt this question drift in his mind... but he wouldn't have to wait long for an answer, as he just so happened to live right in the heart of it all, Phantomille. A fantasy land where the energy of forgotten dreams of the collective is gathered to shape the world around Cress, the Moon Kingdom. Once a kid who lived an uneventful life in Breezegale with his grandfather, he now found himself a new friend when he stumbled on a ring that fell from the sky in the form of a green spirit called Huepow, and they became inseparable friends at first sight. But next thing he knew the next day a ship fell on a hill close to his house, leading the two to meet the Dark Lord Ghadius, and find out about his new plan to use the Diva Lephise as a host for his evil to drown Phantomille in nightmares. So Klonoa and Huepow began a journey to stop Ghadius and his forces of darkness from unleashing the seal of the Moon Kingdom.
The duo battled all kinds of Phantom Beasts and even the right hand of Ghadius, Joka. Who didn’t take having his plans ruined frequently well, so when he heard that Klonoa had the catalyst to remove the seal in his house and that his grandfather was there; he killed two birds with one stone by nuking the whole place and taking the Moon Pendant. But as Klonoa mourned for the loss of his only parental figure, little did he know that this would start a chain of events to learn about his true role in this world.
After getting revenge on Joka, he learned that his friend Huepow was not a spirit but actually the prince of the Moon Kingdom who escaped. Klonoa was filled with so many questions but he knew there was so little time to answer them as the kingdom’s seal was broken and began to be consumed in nightmares. Finally coming face to face with Ghadius, the two defeated not only him but also the living manifestation of nightmares that was formed from the source of Phantomille, Nahatomb, in a grueling battle where Huepow nearly risked his life to destroy Nahatomb only to survive just within an inch of his life left, he promised that they “would be always together.” But just when this story seemed to have a happy ending, Huepow finally told him what he didn’t wanna say all this time: Klonoa never belonged to this reality. All of his memories from his grandfather’s relationship to his childhood spent with Huepow were all lies. Fake memories given by Huepow to motivate Klonoa into saving Phantomille because he was the Dream Traveller — the dreamer called from his reality to bring balance to the worlds. Once the Diva Lephise sang the Song of Rebirth the world would fix itself back to the way it was, which would not only include sending Klonoa back to his world but removing his memories.
Klonoa, with barely any time to process, denied over and over that such a lie could be real until the truth set in and a portal appeared to bring him back. As Huepow watched Klonoa go he still felt a genuine connection that grew from their adventure, and did all he could to let Klonoa stay. Unfortunately, while their friendship was strong it wasn’t enough to keep Klonoa in his world and in a blink he was gone, from that moment Klonoa understood why some dreams were forgotten.
Klonoa would repeat the cycle four years later and hear a mysterious calling for help in another world, before being rescued in the Sea of Tears by the priestess Lolo and her dog companion, Popka. Finding himself in Lunatea; a kingdom of emotions ranging from Tranquility, Discord, Joy and Indecision where four bells kept the balance in the world, till a mysterious fifth bell made people everywhere fall ill. Lolo and Popka found him when a prophecy from the Baguji foretold that the Dream Traveller would save Lunatea, while initially puzzled as to what his true role was Klonoa felt the need to step in and help after being told about the dangers of the Fifth Bell. So along with Lolo and Popka, Klonoa left to ring each bell in all of the kingdoms and contain the anomaly by collecting Elements.
But that’d be easier said than done. Particularly due to schemes from the sky pirate duo of Leorina & Tat, sending robots at Klonoa’s way and even nearly causing a city wide nuclear meltdown which he stopped, all to get first in a race to steal the elements for their own purposes. These heroics came well in the Old Tree’s test, having to prove if they were worthy to get the last element to save the world once the tree knew of Lolo’s depression. Who harbored insecurities from constantly being bullied for her abilities as a priestess in the past, she began to doubt why she needed to save a world if she lacked the power. In contrast, despite knowing he was a stranger to this world and lacking the power to save it; Klonoa felt the least he could do is persist regardless of the reason. This showing inspired Lolo to stand up for herself and join Klonoa to fight and defeat Polonte, proving that people could become greater than the sum of their parts by working with each other. Impressing the Old Tree enough and earning them the last Element.
With all elements gathered they were ready to contain the evil of the fifth bell with Baguji, but suddenly, a disguised Leorina stole all of the elements intending to connect the path of the fifth bell to this world with the Ark and drown it in sorrow as revenge on everybody. Klonoa took pursuit as the sea of tears dried, facing a mutated Leorina who had been mutated into an unrecognizable monster by the elements. Upon defeat she realized that no amount of power would overcome her own sorrow, joining Klonoa to stop the Ark from connecting the world. But it was too late, that which people tried so hard to reject appeared, and Klonoa had only just enough time to defeat the source of this anomaly in the Kingdom of Sorrow. There at the top he met the mysterious voice that had called him forth in the first place, the King of Sorrow.
Turns out, everyone was manipulated under a false prophecy by the King with his shadow puppet Baguji to call his kingdom into existence again. As the Kingdom of Sorrow was always part of this world, but the people of Lunatea chose to veil their eyes on what hurt them the most. Pretending as if their sorrow never existed at all in their hearts. So if people wouldn’t embrace sorrow, he would make sure everyone would drown in it to remember by having Klonoa bear their sins. In their battle, Klonoa literally tore every emotional barrier shielding the King to show him what the outside world really was. While the King of Sorrow began to fade away in his arms, Klonoa assured he wouldn’t have to run away anymore… Lunatea would soon remember what they had forgotten. Ending the anomaly forever.
With another day saved, Lolo and Popka knew that it was Klonoa’s time to depart from Lunatea, so with tears in her eyes Lolo hugged him as if this would be the last time they’d meet. Remembering the words of a dear friend that felt appropriate to say at this moment, telling Lolo that so long as she can remember the feeling this moment left on her that “they’ll always be together.” Perhaps, that was his sign as a hero. To accept and keep moving forward in spite of what life may throw, awaiting towards the next moment he would be called by those in need.
NiGHTS
What if all of your dreams were real? What if the place you went to when you closed your eyes and fell asleep wasn’t just a figment of your imagination? When everyone falls asleep, their consciousness enters another world called the Night Dimension. Here, everyone experiences their own dreams brought to life in Nightopias. Little creatures called Pians recreate the world from our own memory via a special energy called the Ideya, the energy emitted by the dreams and hopes of humans.
But for every joyful dream that a human experiences, there’s always a counterbalance. In the depths of the nightmares that torment dreamers during their slumber, the aptly named Nightmarens exist to stir up trouble. Led by the powerful Wizeman the Wicked, nothing but bad things happened when the Nightmarens were around. But one lone creation of the evil wizard couldn’t stand for these unjust actions. NiGHTS was their name, and although they rebelled against their evil master, ultimately they were sealed away…
Enter two young children with big ambitions, but equally big insecurities. Elliot wanted to be great at basketball, but was bullied by his peers. Claris wanted to be a great singer, but was too shy to go up on stage. These problems would follow them day and night, eating away at their emotions. During their midnight slumber, both end up traveling into the world of dreams. It’s in this land beyond all logic that they meet NiGHTS. By merging their powers together with the Nightmaren and Dualizing, both children fight against the evil forces of the Nightmarens, driving them and their master out of Nightopia. Not only were they able to move past their insecurities and prove their bravery… but they also managed to take another step closer to their goals in the real world.
But so long as there exists evil in the hearts of people, Wizeman the Wicked will never stay gone for good. Years later, two more children in similar dire straits, Will and Helen, were thrust into the world of dreams once more. But despite being just as afraid, that mischievous yet well-meaning dream spirit was there to show them the path towards light. Fear is natural, but embracing one’s fear and pushing forward in spite of that? That’s true courage. It just goes to show that sometimes, in order to achieve our goals in life, sometimes we just need the push from the right person. And who better than NiGHTS to show that, yes… you can make your dreams come true?
Skill & Experience
Klonoa
Due to going on adventures since the 90s, Klonoa's got a pretty good belt of intelligence, skill and experience on him despite his incredibly young age. While it’s unknown when Klonoa started his journey as a dream traveler, we know it to be at least four years of experience as it’s been around the age of a fourth grader during the first game, while he’s said to be a second-year middle schooler by Klonoa 2, with the comics showing that he continued to go on adventures even after those two games, as his dreams get jumbled together which results in even more journeys.
These adventures range in all sorts of scale, from fighting off The Dark King Ghadius who planned on using the nightmare god Nahatomb to destroy his home of Phantomile, to saving the four elements of Lunatea including sorrow while passing the test of Indecision, to going through various paintings in a museum to find fragments of the moon with him trying to fix it after it had been destroyed, to defeating the four monsters of the Kingdom of Jillius to clear his name, to then competing in the intense Dream Champ Tournament, and in an alternate world, he once even went on an incredibly long RPG-style adventures across several lands alongside his allies to save the world that spanned across multiple days in a game that's over 10 hours long. Oh yeah, he also once competed in a pretty big game of volleyball and ended up winning, good for him!
Over the course of these adventures, Klonoa was met face to face with many foes, all of varying shapes and sizes, with all of this allowing him to have incredible skill in combat. He typically fights through utilising projectiles, aiming for weak spots such as a sensitive back, or cleverly taking advantage of weaknesses such as when he forced a large Moo to absorb a bundle of Dream Crystals leading to it getting overwhelmed and exploding. Klonoa's also been shown to be skilled in other forms of combat such as being adept in many weapons as shown in Klonoa Heroes, fighting with a large hammer, two armed cannons for ranged attacks, and even a sword, with official sources even stating Klonoa wields a sword well, alongside his own creator stating he’s a fierce hand to hand fighter even without any weapon, which isn’t a surprise considering he’s amazingly skilled on his own, once creating and mastering a special attack in only a few seconds. With this insane combat prowess it's no surprise Klonoa's taken down the best of the best. He’s constantly been shown to be a rival to Guntz, defeating him several times, a bounty hunter skilled with all sorts of weapons, alongside having a legendary reputation that spans across several dream worlds, it’s said he’s looked up to by Chipple, an amateur but very adept boxer with a variety of techniques who is constantly training to become a boxing champion, and he’s even fought and defeated Ghadius, a being who existed prior to the creation of everything where he engaged in the 100 day war against the spirits which made all of Phantomile.
Beyond being adept in combat, Klonoa also has many other skills, such as being a phenomenal parkourist, scaling entire castles with his bare hands, having pretty good snowboarding skills while avoiding many hazards and projectiles, he can invent some pretty nifty looking contraprints such as an entire helicopter hat in only a few seconds, he for some odd reason knows effective hypnosis, and he can even sing… pretty darn well.
NiGHTS
Despite their comparatively limited number of games, NiGHTS is no slouch when it comes to showing off their skills. Their simple flight movements show incredible acrobatic skills, performing the trickiest of somersaults and dives. In the racing games, any playable character can do plenty of acrobatic tricks mid-air while still managing to stick the landing every time. But if you think fancy acrobatics is all they’re capable of, think again!
NiGHTS has demonstrated very quick and creative thinking in order to deal with their enemies. They often take advantage of targeting specific weaknesses, such as removing Jackle’s cape so that they cannot use their powers. NiGHTS has even fought and defeated Reala, their exact equal in all abilities. We also know that six months passed between NiGHTS’s first outing and Christmas NiGHTS, giving the Nightmaren more time. Heck, with the help of Claris and Elliot, NiGHTS was able to defeat Wizeman in combat. Keep in mind that Wizeman is incredibly old, existing as the first ever intelligent being in the Night Dimension. Older than even Owl, who’s existed for thousands of years in the dimension.
While we don’t know exactly how much time passed between the original game and Journey of Dreams, we do see them perform the same inventive tactics, such as using Paraloops to destroy the balloon body of Girania, or defeating Bomamba by tilting all her cats into her magic seals. NiGHTS once again defeats Wizeman in combat, proving that the first go-around wasn’t a fluke. Beyond that, NiGHTS is also stated to be brilliant at using the Extreme Gear system, which comes with an absurd variety of customization and combinations to use at their disposal (more on that in its own section!) With the hoverboards, they can even do crazy things like riding the wind currents, grind on rails, or… up the back of a gigantic centipede. Gross.
They also seem to be good at tennis-based variations of Puyo Puyo and Virtual Cop. Fun!
Equipment
Klonoa
Wind Ring
As signature to Klonoa as his bright blue hat and big fluffy ears. Found in the forest one-day while wandering around, this is The Wind Ring, Klonoa's signature tool for adventuring and combat. What it is, we don’t have much information on, however manuals state it’s a ‘mystical’ item implying some close tie to magic, with it even being underlined with data that someone can try and copy. What we do for sure know is it's an incredibly powerful relic that keeps his connection with the one empowering the ring, typically requiring a spirit like Huepow or a priestess like Lolo to provide it with spiritual power. Albeit nowadays it’s shown he does not need to utilize a spirit or friend for the ring to work, but a source of power does likely make it stronger.
The Wind Ring’s signature ability is The Wind Bullet. A short but incredibly fast blast of wind Klonoa can shoot out, that’s been shown in other bits of media to go even further than it does in-game, inflating whoever it hits into the shape of a ball, which Klonoa can then pick-up and utilise as either a hard hitting projectile which makes them pop and disappear, or as a platform he throws down to perform an incredible double jump to get to higher ground. This bullet works on all types of enemies, going right through body armour, and harming non-physical enemies made of energy or ones that act as ghosts, negating their intangibility, it even has shown to work on other things besides living creatures, as it’s turned bullets into large balls the size of an entire room that can bring down castles, made boulders float and inflated multiple houses making them float in the air.
The Wind Ring can also be used in a number of other ways, it can lift stuff above Klonoa's head without needing to inflate them, rapid fire a barrage of bullets at great speeds to hit multiple targets, shoot out a blast of wind to blow away jesters, create powerful whirlwinds to make everything around him dizzy, fire off gusts of wind that have enough potency to blow open a door, and even smash a strong circular cage. It can even store items inside it that Klonoa can summon whenever he needs to, it’s able to shoot out a potent energy blast in Klonoa Heroes that deals great damage to opponents as opposed to inflating them, and if a situation gets desperate enough, Klonoa can fire out his power source such as Huepow as a gigantic energy blast that has enough potency to take down nearly invincible enemies such as Nahatomb.
Throwable Enemies
As said earlier, Klonoa's main form of attacking an opponent is by grabbing any enemy around him, inflating them with The Wind Ring, and throwing them with immense force, so much so it can knock over large stone pillars and shatter large boulders. There's many types of enemies Klonoa can throw, which all hold their own unique attributes that he can utilise for puzzle solving and combat. While all of them won’t be covered here as some of them are just as basic as ‘You Throw Them And It Deals Damage’ the ones that grant Klonoa new powers will. These enemies include…
Moos: The most basic of them all. These are easily the most common enemies in Klonoa, while there are many variants they all essentially serve the same purpose of being used by Klonoa for double jumps or ranged attacks. They have more unique quirks than just that however, such as endlessly spawning through a portal upon being thrown, with Klonoa in certain crossovers having the ability to summon Moos naturally whenever. Moos have also shown the ability to create big explosions if multiple are thrown at once, and for some odd reason have the unique ability of turning targets into Moos as well upon being hit, which Klonoa can likely utilise.
Boomies: Another pretty common enemy Klonoa can throw, but this one has a pretty special ability. As you could likely tell from its name, Boomies are large enemies Klonoa can throw at targets, but instead of being a basic projectile they explode upon impact, dealing massive damage, and they’re incredibly potent as one of these little guys are shown in the manga to have enough power to create an explosion similar to a mushroom cloud that was visible from far away.
Tetons: While the last enemy was very clearly more made to be a projectile, this one serves a very good use for mobility, as with his Wind Ring Klonoa can grab onto what known as a Teton, a flying creature which he can then use to control, allowing Klonoa to fly around at pretty high speeds. This is far from the only flying enemy Klonoa can grab onto as he has also used Kitons to fly around with, and he’s also used Jetimos which are small creatures that function similarly to a flying jet, with them charging up upon being grabbed by Klonoa before blasting him high up into the sky, letting Klonoa reach incredibly high places in a matter of seconds.
Likuris: A very unique enemy used for puzzle solving and combat. Likuris are flying creatures Klonoa can grab that when thrown, absorb any enemy turning them into a large circle of energy, which returns right back to Klonoa, who can then use again to absorb more enemies before being able to throw the large energy ball out as a projectile which also then shatters special crystal walls in one go.
Erbils: Another one useful for mobility and combat. This little creature is an Erbil, which Klonoa can grab and jump off of, with the creature then firing out a bolt of lightning which surrounds itself around Klonoa, as he utilises said lightning to propel himself high into the air or ram into targets such as large crates, which he can easily smash through when engulfed.
Air Board
A rental board from Joiland which Popka kindly stole borrowed. It can breeze and slide on any type of surface like snow, sand or water at a brisk pace, and with some build up from passing through these rings, the board can build enough speed to ram and send much larger enemies flying.
Hearts
Should Klonoa get a nasty bump don’t fret, a little pair of hearts will restore his health like nothing happened! how much depends on the size of the heart itself.
Dream Stones
The Dream Gems are small stones that Klonoa can collect over the course of the series, if he collects up to 99 of these he gets an extra life in typical Mario fashion. But it gets weirder… if for some damn reason Klonoa decides to eat enough of them, he can increase his size and become a giant by consuming enough dream stones. But he has to be careful about it, or else he’ll be the one popping like a balloon instead.
Mirror Spirits
Native to Phantomille and Lunatea these fairies double anything you can think of in size or quantity. Typically they can temporarily double the amount of Dream Gems Klonoa gets, but in other mediums they're shown duplicate structures like buildings or even creating a mirror replica of the sun that’s twice the size.
Retry Clocks
Retry Clocks are checkpoints that wake Klonoa back to where he was last time should he lose all his hearts and pass out, so for example if he takes a dip in lava, drowns in water or falls to his impending doom he can re-wind back to safety just fine.
But like most platforming characters Klonoa needs 1-Up Coins to keep doing this, so if he runs out it’s over for him. Although with 99 lives at his disposal it’ll certainly take some time to run out.
Wind Sword
Klonoa can wield a blade made out of wind, letting him unleash a wide variety of swings on large areas at the cost of leaving him wide open.
Wind Hammer
Have an annoying obstacle in your way? Well, you’re in luck. Because the Wind Hammer is a giant mallet that specializes in playing whack-a-mole with anything that lives, Klonoa can spin this hammer around to hit groups of enemies and create explosions on impact, which are strong enough to shatter shields that can make attacks bounce back.
Beam Parasol
A parasol barrier presumably formed from his own wind power, while it’s attack range may not be the greatest it can make great defense that negates enemy projectiles and even can spin to bash it against enemies.
Crash Ball
Dual hand cannons that can shoot spiky balls, which can separate.
Boomerang
Klonoa throws a giant boomerang that flies towards the nearest enemy and can roll around Klonoa to hit groups of enemies.
Dive Suit/Deep One
Akin to a certain blue blur, Klonoa hasn’t quite learned how to swim, so to circumvent that trauma he uses this ugly mechanical suit that lets him navigate underwater and even wander across space on other planets. While the Deep One certainly might not have the smoothest sailing under the sea due to its heavy weight, Klonoa's made great use of it, it’s got built-in magnets to attract gems and coins towards him and mechanical limbs that can still let him use his abilities and weapons.
Robotic Mech
Another gift from Garlen, this giant mech replica of Klonoa is built to fight against Kaiju, but it has an absolutely awful sense of direction that can only be rivaled by Zoro.
Giant Rod
Now, you might think a magic rod that can increase one’s size to kaiju proportions sounds awesome. But it’s unfortunately a work in progress that can only increase the size of specific body parts, which is a massive bummer.
The Ultra Pill
A pill with an unknown effect that must be ABSOLUTELY ingested with water, otherwise, it’ll turn anyone into a living bomb and explode them from the inside in less than five burps. In Klonoa’s case, it might not be soooo much Kamikaze since he survived the bomb when he tried to sacrifice himself.
Light
An unknown light source that Klonoa uses to light up dark areas during Dream Champ Tournament
Klonoa Heroes Items
Over his journeys across the world, Klonoa has amassed a large collection of items in his bag from treasure chests to use. From healing items, timestopping or stat altering badges he’s certainly got it all to take on Phantom Beasts.
Boiled Egg, Instant Ramen and Bistro Curry: Klonoa Heroes food looks so good! These tasty meals can restore Klonoa’s health in small or large quantities when Klonoa takes a bite. And if he dies, he can just come back to life by eating them.
Honey Juice: Recovers half of Klonoa’s special gauge
Veggie Juice: A vegetable juice box that can instantly heal any kind of status effect in the game: like having your health slowly taken away by Poison, remember forgotten moves caused by Amnesia or even heal Curses that can reduce ability values.
Angel Ring: An accessory that revives Klonoa with full health, but only once.
Badges: Essentially Klonoa Heroes’s version of armor in an RPG, Badges can simultaneously boost and lower his stats at the same time as seen above.
Notebook: Makes Klonoa completely immune to any kind of Amnesia attack
Claire’s Amulet: Any kind of curses that involve altering his stats straight up just don’t work by using this amulet.
Vaccine: Gains an immunity to strikes or projectiles that can cause Poison
Slazza Guard: Reduces damage from projectiles by one fourth.
Balue’s Mystery: Increases his Special Power gauge twice as fast.
Moo Wing: If things get too dangerous for him, he can summon forth these Moo Wings to send him back to Vision Space.
Time Firefly: Klonoa can summon a firefly that briefly stops time with fairy dust for a total of 5 seconds, which he can extend further by 1.5x with a Firefly Seal.
NiGHTS
Persona Masks
Inspired by Carl Jung’s Dream Theory, the Persona Masks are transforming accessory power-ups gained after defeating bosses that fundamentally change NiGHTS’s shapeshifting abilities. Donning the appearance of different animals or vehicles as new selves with new abilities, all tailored to their current environment.
Dolphin NiGHTS: This mask lets NiGHTS turn into a dolphin to effortlessly glide underwater, even on worlds surrounded solely by water. Mayyyybe a bit redundant since they can already do that with their shapeshifting, but eh.
Rocket NiGHTS: NiGHTS can quite literally blast off into the air as they turn into a blazing fast rocket.
Dragon NiGHTS: NiGHTS is able to transform into a huge dragon, being able to halt their momentum midair with ease, totally unaffected by the winds as a result. And if they build enough momentum, they can surround themselves in a cone of fire.
Car NiGHTS: A Persona Mask that NiGHTS used to participate in the race. It serves as a vehicle for whoever riding in it that can keep up with other high-powered cars, it can drift and shapeshift itself into a water or flying vehicle depending on the environment. This shit looks ugly as fuck.
Power Panels
NiGHTS is capable of finding various Power Panels throughout Nightopia, usually hidden and needing to be found via Paraloop. These are single-use items which disappear upon being used up. A list of them can be found here.
Long Dust: Allows NiGHTS to draw and create larger Paraloops by creating larger trails of Twinkle Dust.
Dash Power: Restores NiGHTS’s Dash Power to full.
Time Stop: Freezes time in Nightopia for a few seconds.
Nightopians: Summons a bunch of little Pians to help collect Blue Chips for NiGHTS
Nightopians on their own are quite capable little creatures. Individual Pians can recreate the happy world inside the memory of humans to create their own Nightopia. In the Archie Comics, they’re capable of interfering with technology and appearing inside screens, as well as transmuting debris into water or making people fall asleep with their breath… take a mint.
Extreme Gear
Dating back to the Ancient Babylonians themselves, Extreme Gears are the air vehicles and motorized sensations of the 2000s that Sonic & Co use to participate in EX World Grand Prix in Sonic Riders. Their incredible mobility is related to the Kutta Joukowski lift theorem, a fundamental of aerodynamics that lets them achieve flight or float in space. They can do a variety of cool things like drift on sharp turns or propulse themselves in the air to jump over waterfalls, shoot tornados to slow down others and even create trails of air called Turbulence that many of the Sonic Riders can use to ride on the wind. Of course, since many of these actions run on air overusing it will make it over heat and leave it temporarily unusable, but picking up a power-up or doing some nasty sick Air Tricks will give the board life again.
Extreme Gears can also use air to boost at speeds of 200/250/350 mph with just a single boost, but by being able to maintain five boosts at once they can temporarily surround themselves in a layer of iron to become invincible, negating attacks for a time.
Gears also come in types designed to suit the person by classifying them in specialty ( Speed/Power/Air) and the vehicles used (Board/Skates/Air Ride/Bike/Wheel/Yacht). Speed Types obviously excel on speed and can grind their gears on rails, Power Types who use boards and bikes can knock obstacles like cars or stone blocks in the air and Air Types that use Air Rides and Yachts can launch off runways and fly through accelerators or… just by themselves really. Naturally, due to their ability to fly NiGHTS primarily excels on the flight type and rolls out with either the Night Sky or the Dream Sleeper by default; two boards with average stats specifically designed to be used by Nightmarens, which can automatically repair if sawed in half or crushed.
Although NiGHTS lacks the attributes of other classes, other Extreme Gears like the appropriately named Grinder and the Destroyer will let them grind or destroy obstacles just fine. But this is just scratching the surface, there are far more Extreme Gears that NiGHTS can use which are far more numerous to simply list here, but we’ll note down the most unique ones below while excluding those that are either redundant or exclusive to characters such as Sonic’s Chaos Emeralds.
Gear Parts
Extreme Gears could already be upgraded with rings to increase stats and even air capacity, but adding the performance enhancing gear parts to the mix adds a whole new layer to the competition with many modifications. Among these include transforming vehicles, performing abilities automatically or improving the rate and specs of the vehicles. Though only up to three of these are present per vehicle to keep things fair.
Ark of the Cosmos
Yet another tool invented by the Babylonians that crash landed on our planet. The Ark of Cosmos are five anti-gravity engine units that several characters on Sonic Riders Zero Gravity wear on their bodies like bracelets or in NiGHTS’s case, a collar, and within this group of engines is the Master Unit, who all the others serve under while they gravitate and attract each other. As engine units, they were originally used to transmute a planet’s mass energy and create a singularity, thereforing charging up gravity to power Babylon Garden’s warp drive, further corroborated by how the similarly described power unit can use huge amounts of mass energy to convert it into other forms of energy with its unique magnetic field. This anti-gravity field expands with the most satisfying bassdrop you’ve ever heard, generating a Zero Gravity effect where anything caught within it floats, so there’s plenty of ways you can imagine they can follow.
For instance: the ability Gravity Control can halt missiles in the air and throw them at other people, or stop themselves in the air to make sharp turns they otherwise wouldn’t be able to make with a drift and even stick along walls with Wall Route. It can even be used offensively, by making groups of enemies float and repelling them with a good old talk to the hand.
Though if NiGHTS is falling way behind other riders they can rely on Ark’s most chaotic ability: the Gravity Dive. Creating a mini black hole that generates gravity in the current direction of travel, not only making NiGHTS to glide at high speeds (which exceed anything in the speed meter btw!) but also causing every surrounding object in its path to be hurling in that direction. Such as making trains bounce all over the place, chopping trees, throwing computer screens through a steel door or making robots and steel containers float. And crashing through all of these can boost the Gravity Dive even further with Meteor Burst.
But just like the Extreme Gears, many of these actions run on Gravity Points (GP) so overusing them could lead to these powers being unusable without moderation and if it ever comes to that, Riders have plenty of ways to refill. Such as pulling off stunts like riding on rails, showing off with Air Tricks or whatever extra special function the Gear you chose has that can restore the gauge.
Tennis Racket
When NiGHTS partakes for a leisurely time to takes shots at the court, they’re certainly prepared for the occasion, it might not look like much at first. But this unnamed tennis racket can hit tennis balls with enough force to destroy asteroids, spaceships and… moyais.
Miscellaneous Sonic Items
NiGHTS has used some of the same items as the Sonic cast from Item Boxes whenever they were brought out of the limelight by SEGA to cameo yet again. So there’s plenty of souvenirs to pick from, though these come out at random so they’ll have to settle for what they can get.

Abilities
Klonoa
Dream Traveler Physiology
So let’s pose a question: what is Klonoa? Is it cat or wabbit season for him? well the answer is… nobody can provide one, not even Klonoa himself. But he’s always felt something strange since he’s been born: every time he slept the adventures in his dreams felt so real he couldn't distinguish them from reality, like he really was in them… but make no mistake, as dreams are more real than reality. Literally, as he turned out to be the elusive dreamer known as the Dream Traveller. A hero from another reality that travels to other worlds when he’s asleep or is called for help by others, his presence within those worlds makes him appear as a strange “dream” to those around him. Appearing in one moment, and then disappearing the next once his task is done, making him fully incorruptible to the effects of nightmare energy. While this method of travel isn't something he has control over, Klonoa's been able to surf on the collection of old and new dreams that is the Dream Stream —- appearing on those dreams to wake people back to their own reality.
While not explicitly said in the games themselves as to where he goes after his mission is done, near the end of Klonoa 2 we do see Klonoa exit the bubble of reality of Lunatea and then wake back to his own world. There are certain interpretations to this from different creators, the Noctis Sol comic decides to play it straight by having Klonoa dream from his own reality, and have faint memories of past games. But according to series co-creator Hideo Yoshizawa it gets quite meta, as Klonoa is a sort of “clone” of the player meant to act as their alter-ego when they go to other realities and are linked to one another as if they were one. And I might hear you shouting in the back, but unfortunately Klonoa cannot weaponize this whatsoever and has never shown to… so Klonoa is still tangibly his own person and this might be more akin to a “psychological link”.
But regardless of where he came from, being a Dream Traveller has its superhuman perks: he’s strong enough to lift and send moos flying into the sky, can maneuver around most moving platforms and following the trend of painful cartoon slapstick; can certainly take as much punishment as he can give. He’s had a liver strong enough to withstand digesting a bomb exploding from inside him or swallow an entire pool’s worth of water, and has skin so rubbery that piercing weapons like bullets bounce off him
Cabbit Ears
These fluffy cat rabbit ears aren’t just for decoration. With the Fluttering Jump he can flap his ears mid-air to fly! or well… It's more like he can temporarily float and clear gaps he couldn’t before with a mid-air hustle.
So maybe he can’t fly but he can achieve similar things, he can push himself in the vacuum of space and ride in currents of wind by flapping his ears on them… assuming he doesn’t fall off of them. And should he need an extra hand, Klonoa’s ears can serve as an extra set of arms that can shift into fists to lift weights or bend metal bars.
Double Wind Bullet Tornado
By letting both Lolo and Huepow inhabit the ring and share their power to Klonoa, he can double the power of his normal Wind Bullet and blow away enemies with a tornado.
Tornado Attack
From his training with Balue (if you can even call it that), Klonoa learnt his first Special Move by charging and focusing his own wind power with his will; letting him create a torrent of swirling tornadoes that circle around Klonoa to hit enemies surrounding him. It can even be transferred as shown in Klonoa Beach Volleyball, where Klonoa managed to send his Tornado Attack into a volleyball to blow away his opponents out of the court.
Thunder Hurricane
After accidentally stepping on a wire and being electrocuted of all things, a little lightbulb kicked up sparked an idea for a new special move: The Thunder Hurricane. Where Klonoa spins fast enough to rain down bolts of lightning on any poor Moo that happened to pass by.
Accelerated Development
Keeping up with the game’s theme of growing stronger and stronger like a shonen protagonist. Klonoa Heroes has a growth system where Klonoa can level up and freely adjust his stats from gaining experience collected from Dream Pieces, complete with restoring his health back to top condition. And stats play a greater effect in gameplay through Ability Values: increasing AT/SP (Attack and Special Power) of course lets him deal a greater amount of damage from normal and special attacks, DF (Defense) turns Klonoa far more resilient to enemy attacks to the point he can become less susceptible to status effects and be completely impervious to attacks from enemies much weaker than he is, and AG (Agility) increases Klonoa’s mobility and his rate of dodging and landing attacks while in turn decreasing the chances of having critical strikes landed on him.
This also is part of the game’s story in itself. After Klonoa and Pango were put in a grueling fight with an infinitely inferior clone of Joka, they met the real deal and were effortlessly defeated by that bastard Joka in a single hit. With a then recovering Klonoa stating that the gap in power was too much. But once Klonoa and buds started to rank up in Volk City they were able to go from being bitchslapped by Joka to being the one to fight him on equal terms and bitchslap him instead.
Regeneration
Somewhat implied, Klonoa does seem to have a bit of a healing factor from the constant abuse the poor kid just gets in the Klonoa Heroes manga. He’s taken an arrow to the head and then an anvil and has been squashed flat across several occasions.
Hammerspace
Klonoa’s got quite the deep pockets to pull out anything that he needs out of thin air and doesn’t need, potentially explaining why he can carry so many items in different games.
Resistances
Extreme Heat: Klonoa has survived fire attacks and being pelted with lava rocks shot out of a volcano, which clocks around at 700 to 1,200 °C.
Electricity and Lightning: While figuring out how to come up with a new move Klonoa once accidentally stepped on a socket and was immediately electrocuted for being a dumbass, but don’t worry he re-emerged from it just fine. Afterall, he doesn’t even complain when struck by a bolt of lightning or being regularly engulfed in lightning by Erbils.
Corruption, Possession, Sealing, Mind Manipulation and Dream Manipulation: As claimed by both Ghadius and Huepow, Klonoa is a “dream” that cannot be corrupted or be consumed in the drought of Nightmares, even when the world was being changed and transformed by nightmare waves from a solar eclipse. So reasonably, he should reasonably be more than capable of resisting most of its powers including sealing people in nightmares, controlling minds or being possessed and turned into a monster with Nightmare Energy like how the Diva Lephise was used as the host of Nahatomb.
Statistics Reduction, Memory Manipulation and a Limited Resistance to Poison: If his defenses are high enough Klonoa can become less vulnerable to the effects of Sleep, Amnesia and Poison without equipment. Though this last one isn’t a full proof resistance, as he has been affected by Janga’s poisonous claws and nearly died from it.
Sleep Manipulation: Despite Garlen’s technology being capable of making an entire planet sleep overtime by spreading a mist of light generated with radio waves, Klonoa and his friends were one of the lucky few unaffected by these waves. Even when they stood and travelled over the fluctuation that was Nahatomb’s Darkness, which was capable of making Garlen fall asleep overtime.
NiGHTS
Nightmaren Physiology
Nightmarens are special creatures. As dream spirits, they are nothing like any lifeform found in the real world beyond your wildest dreams and gain a lot of pleasure from startling or scaring people. Nightmarens are separated by three ranks, each one generally stronger than the last based on how much lifeforce Wizeman decides to spend into each piece. Third-Level Nightmarens are the weakest and least intelligent that just mindlessly feast on Nightopians. Second-Level Nightmarens are smarter, and have the ability to create whole worlds. First-Level Nightmarens are the most intelligent, and have free will of their own. NiGHTS, of course, is a First-Level Nightmaren, which grants them superior flight and shapeshifting abilities.
Nightmarens also interact in interesting ways with their light counterpart, the Nightopians (or Pians for short). For example, the presence of more Nightopians in a specific dream can shift the environment to look more like a Nightopia. Of course, the opposite is true, as if there are more Nightmarens, the dream will look more like a Nightmare. And if the two of them collide, due to the fact that both of them are made from light, they will create a new life. How romantic.
Nightopians and Nightmarens being made of light is actually consistent, as when Nightmarens are defeated, they along with their world explode in bursts of light. Nightopians are also stated to be born every time Ideya, or balls of light, collide with each other.
Gilwing, a Second Level-Nightmaren, is capable of regenerating its head after having it punched off. NiGHTS, as a superior First-Level Nightmaren, more than likely has such capabilities. More definitively, all Nightmarens have their existence tied to Wizeman the Wicked. Should he die, they all die, and Nightmare as a realm collapses entirely. However despite having their entire form dissipate into light, NiGHTS somehow returned to dream another day even without Wizeman’s influence. Interestingly enough, the Archie Comics gives additional information on general dream spirit physiology. Nightmarens can return from their deaths in the dream world so long as they can be dreamt up again, although this process is stated to take a lot of time… something that might be supported by how the world of dreams is described to never disappear. Additionally, NiGHTS is equal in every way to Reala except their personality. Since both are meant to act as counterparts to each other like Light and Dark, anything Reala can do is something NiGHTS is capable of, as a fellow First-Level Nightmaren.
Enhanced Senses and Potential NPI: NiGHTS can sense the nearby dream energy coming from other Visitors like Claris, and can spot and physically interact with beings like Nightmarens, beings from other planes of existence that can’t be sensed by normal people.
Energy Projection and Attack Reflection: Both NiGHTS and Reala can fire energy beams, make things explode with energy tendrils and create huge energy constructs that fire off balls of energy. NiGHTS can grab ahold of them and throw them right back at Reala.
Possible Teleportation: Reala is capable of teleporting. NiGHTS should theoretically be able to replicate this as Reala’s equal, further supported by how they’re able to teleport opponents to confuse them with their superstar move and have been able to appear in the Real World across several occasions.
Possible Absorption: Weaker Nightmarens are capable of EATING little Pians. This implication is unbelievably disturbing. However, it is highly HIGHLY unlikely NiGHTS would even think of doing something like this, we just wanted to bring it up to freak you the hell out.
Elastic & Shapeshifting body
As a Nightmaren, NiGHTS’s body is incredibly unique in terms of physical capabilities. Due to the fact that they’re a First Level Nightmaren, they have superior flying abilities and the ability to shapeshift at will, depending on the environment. This kind of adaptational shapeshifting is very consistently described and shown to us as a key part of their powers throughout the levels of the games. For example, they can turn into a mermaid when swimming underwater, turn into a boat for traversal above water, bounce around and curl up into a ball, become a sleigh when going down steep hills, or even turn into a dang roller coaster! This shapeshifting even carried over to the crossover where NiGHTS was… a car.
NiGHTS’s cartoon-like physics also apply to whenever they get hurt, where their body can be twisted and flattened, and, in the Archie Comics, they can eat and spit back bullets to convert them as energy without too much damage.
Ideya
Functioning as the UES of the series, the Ideya are one of the most important aspects of the lore. But what exactly is an Ideya? Well, we’ve got the answers. Present in everyone’s consciousness, spreading their energy, the Ideyas are special spheres of light that represent five different elements of the psyche. White represents Purity, Green represents Growth, Blue represents Intelligence, Yellow is Hope and the most powerful one of all, Red, represents courage and dwells in those who possess all five of the Ideya. Unlike in ancient times, when the Red Ideya was far more common, it has become exceedingly rare in the modern era, being possessed only by exceptional Dream Visitors such as Elliot and Claris. All of these traits will give one good dreams if experienced. Whenever we dream and enter the Night Dimension, visitors carry these five Ideyas with them, ultimately culminating in a power that creates our respective Nightopia, or the world present within our dreams, also opening a portal towards it.
Ideya energy is so fundamental to the series' cosmology that even Star Chips are described as fragments of stars born from it. Without all five Ideyas being present, a Visitor's Nightopia cannot be fully restored, as the Ideyas themselves are the source from which it is formed. At the start of each level, your Ideyas are stolen, and NiGHTS has to capture them again in order to travel to different Nightmare worlds. Given their power to create, Nightmarens take advantage of that by stealing Ideya in order to destroy Nightopia. Conversely, recovering all five Ideyas restores a Visitor's Nightopia to its complete state, granting enough power for Elliot and Claris to even shatter Wizeman's sealing barrier. They also manifest in lesser forms as Blue Chips, fragments of Ideya light that can be gathered by NiGHTS to destroy Ideya Captures, while Visitors themselves can release them to activate mechanisms or briefly stun enemies.
As we mentioned, the most powerful Ideya is the Ideya of courage, manifesting as a red sparking light on one’s hand that most Visitors lose on their way. As an exceptionally powerful Ideya, Will’s Ideya of Courage was the main responsible for manifesting his Nightopia. Beyond simply creating dreams, the Red Ideya grants its bearer abilities unique among the five Ideyas. By placing their trust in others, Visitors such as Elliot and Claris are temporarily able to draw upon NiGHTS's powers, while the Red Ideya itself is capable of dispelling any cage used to seal NiGHTS away. In true shonen fashion, the power scale keeps rising, and after conquering his fears and awakening the Ideya of Courage, Elliot was able to confront Reala on his own, overwhelming the Nightmaren with its crimson light and reducing them to nothing. Likewise, the red dream energy stolen from Claris was powerful enough for Wizeman to tear apart the fabric of reality itself in an attempt to reshape the real world. Its influence is not confined to the Night Dimension either, as Visitors use it to accomplish their dreams in the real world. By realizing those dreams, Visitors can in turn channel the power of their Ideya back to NiGHTS, ultimately allowing them to be resurrected and physically manifest within the real world. NiGHTS themselves also possess an Ideya of Courage, allowing them to wield the same fundamental source of dream power as the Visitors they protect.
Dualization
Dualization is the main method NiGHTS uses to grant their power to whatever youth is in need of help, activated by them joining hands. The human who Dualizes with NiGHTS will essentially assimilate with them temporarily, gaining their powers generally implying that this is NiGHTS sharing their powers with the human rather than a need to fuse to use them with another. And dualizing implies more than just that, after bonding NiGHTS will be able to speak to the consciousness of the person they’ve assimilated with and both will follow the actions of each other as if they were one. Though it should be noted that sustaining too much damage will reduce the amount of time that the Dualization lasts and NiGHTS must require getting back into the Ideya Palace to restart their time.
Dualizing with the Nightmaren is also what is used to free them from the sealing of their powers from the Ideya Palace, a gap between dreams that Wizeman devised against them to trap them time and time again as the one obstacle between his plans. However, thanks to NiGHTS’s previous link to the visitors and their Red Ideya they could still use their powers to go back and free them from their clutches. Even being capable of fusing with both parties to appear as two separate NiGHTS for double the trouble.
Flight
Possessing superior flight than most Nightmarens, NiGHTS’s flight is certainly their specialty. Especially when you see how confidently they stride through the surreal landscapes of Nightopia at supersonic speeds, coming to them as naturally as walking… Ironically, the concept of walking was completely alien to them at first and they had to learn how to try it.
But regardless, NiGHTS’s aerial mobility certainly puts them at a higher ground above the rest, literally. They can soar up far enough to make trees appear as little spots on the ground and reach skydivers in the clouds. Their stamina can fly through 999 rings for a long time or catch up to other Nightmarens that also specialize in flight, and can effortlessly perform mid-air acrobatics like cartwheels, dives or somersaults. Even some of the tightest corners or environments like underwater caverns and the vacuum of space are nothing to them. All of this combined makes NiGHTS’s style of fighting entirely focused on high-speed maneuverability; perfect for evading projectiles and flying in circles around enemies to lure them in, then waiting for the right opportunity to take advantage of any weakness or alternatively, just close in with a Drill Dash.
Paraloop
By drawing circular arcs with the light twinkles generated by their hands, NiGHTS can cut and distort space to generate a circular wormhole that pulls any target caught within its area; having a variety of deadly effects depending on how NiGHTS wants to use it. For example: it can be used to attack enemies with an exploding effect, attract nearby objects like Blue Chips or balloons, make things disappear or vanish groups of enemies away to other dimensions for some good crowd control, like when their equal Reala created a portal around Visitors Will and Helen to seal them away to another dream world.
For the more merciful NiGHTS however, Paraloop also serves as a way to save Nightopians and send them into safer places like My Dream, a personal dream world of the player that acts like a sort of Chao Garden where both Nightopians and Nightmarens coexist. (VOLUME WARNING ON THE LAST LINK, PLEASE TURN IT DOWN)
Drill Dash
NiGHTS can directly motion and twist their body like a drill to dash through levels much quicker or drill into other enemies by using their body as a battering ram, letting them clean waves of Nightmarens with ease as well as giving them a fever dream by stunning them if they add just a bit more power. At times, it’s also been shown to transmute things like buildings into balloons.
It should be noted that this move runs on NiGHTS’s Dash Power and using this too much will drain them for the next moments, however passing through green rings will recover their stamina.
Touch-Dash
By getting close to any enemy, NiGHTS can grab and spin them before proceeding to drill into them to the desired direction. It is surprisingly versatile, letting NiGHTS build momentum for their drill dash by pushing themselves off walls or enemies, reflect energy based projectiles back at the sender such as Reala’s spheres and even use the momentum of their spin to banish Nightmarens with the Touch-Loop.
Gossip
Distract a foe by gossiping all over their faces!
Spin Kick
NiGHTS gracefully takes a dance step and kicks the opponent right in their face.
Dream Manipulation
Nightmarens have the ability to manipulate the dreams of Visitors by creating Nightmare worlds with the worst of their nightmares and anxieties, and gain pleasure from scaring them. They can even warp space to drag others into their worlds to battle them there, giving them a home field advantage with attacks tailored to those nightmares. Though perhaps their most impressive showing is when Reala merged and affected two entire nightmares together in the Archie Comic.
Should a Nightmaren falter however and die within this space, their respective Nightmare world will begin to collapse and unleash an explosion of light that consumes everything.
Onomatopeia
A surprising weapon to say the least, both NiGHTS and Reala have shown the ability to weaponize onomatopoeia. Such as using an exclamation mark as a baseball bat to hit back projectiles, or throwing dizzy stars like shurikens.
Fusionism
An ability used by the second level Nightmaren Jackle, he can fuse beings of two species like Nightopians and Nightmarens into one single being and since NiGHTS is at a higher rank than him, they should theoretically be able to use it too. Though it’s questionable how much of this is in character for a goody-two shoes like NiGHTS.
Resistances
Potential Mind Control: Take this with a grain of salt but… NiGHTS’s rebelliousness was enough to potentially evade having a curse put under them, which could make other Nightmarens obey every command of Wizeman.
Extreme Temperatures: Once took impacting against a lava rock mid flight, whose temperature in volcanos goes up to 700 to 1,200 °C and they’re also stated to survive while on ice.
Wind: As Dragon NiGHTS, they become completely immune to wind and the pressure of wind can’t even push them anymore.
Sealing: Dualization has consistently helped NiGHTS break out of being sealed from the Ideya Capture, a gap between dreams.
Support
Klonoa
Popka
(“Angoo!”)
Popka is one of Klonoa’s best friends who followed him when he was on Lunatea, and knows when to drop some real words. He steps in the co-op mode of Klonoa 2 when Klonoa needs help for platforming and his doggy nose can spot who’s who. And while it might not seem like he can fight at first, he’s quite the capable platformer and has shown to have some wind and energy based abilities as he can pelt enemies with spinning energy blades.
Lolo
An apprentice priestess who constantly failed in the exams before eventually passing as a full fledged one after meeting Klonoa, she is the one who provides spiritual power to the Wind Ring during Klonoa 2 and while she can't fight, does have a few powers of her own. She can… make people fall in love with her and send them flying? or contain the dream energies from people everywhere to not let them be taken away by Nahatomb.
NiGHTS
Visitors
When we sleep our consciousness is taken to a place known as the “Night Dimension” where all dreams go, becoming Dream Visitors of the dream worlds generated by the Nightopians who peer into our consciousness and project the happy memories into worlds. Among these Visitors are the young dreamers such as the basketballist Elliot, the vocalist Claris, the football player Will and the violinist Helen who possess the Courage Ideya, a powerful energy source that is the ultimate expression of their courage, which used to be more common in humanity but became extremely rare in modern times. So they’re certainly special amongst the populace and have done things that most humans cannot do.
Visitors typically cannot encounter each other, but people with the Courage Ideya can meet up in their dreams and even assist while they are in a pinch. In NiGHTS’s case although they can’t call to them in battle Thragg style; they’re usually seen with them across their duology of games, comics and storybook when they Dualize with them and have gone to meet them again in their dream world in Christmas NiGHTS. So it stands to reason that NiGHTS should have their support at their side, plus, the Visitors do have several ways to know about NiGHTS’s status. As we know that merely just remembering them in Nightopia will bring NiGHTS to anyone and in the Archie Comics, should NiGHTS be in danger they will immediately receive a vision of their current location.

Scaling
Klonoa
Klonoa Heroes & Others
Klonoa’s met all sorts of wacky people both friend and foe, across the worlds having fought and beaten many of them in tussles or in other kinds of activities. Like when he won a racing marathon across Dreamland where he ran for his life on several courses, eventually ending up as the number one hero. So it’s kind of a no-brainer to generally scale him to most of the feats in the series.
One of Guntz’s explosives was able to destroy Garlen’s entire castle
Pamela has sunk numerous ships
Pango’s explosives can destroy three statues (0.026 Tons of TNT, Small Building)
Chirin made three lava rocks erupt out of a volcano (800.02 Tons of TNT, Multi City Block)
The artists from Moonlight Museum were capable of creating worlds with their power of art, including one where there’s an endless palace of clouds and a world filled with a moon and potentially stars. (MSS - Likely Universal, Before the Verdicts)
Julius might have potentially recreated all of his empire in his dream world, showcasing enough detail to create a moon… within a moon, planets with orbital rings and a whole constellation of stars on two different instances. (MSS - Likely Universal, Before the Verdicts)
Leorina dried the entire sea of tears with all five elements
Pango made a crater from angrily throwing explosives around.
Klonoa Villains
Every time evil rears its ugly head back again in another world Klonoa’s always stepped in to stop most general incidents in the series, and defeated each antagonist behind each conspiracy. So it should be easy as pie to scale him to most feats villains have done in his series, keyword on most.
Nahatomb proves to be the one exception to the rule, at least to his appearance in Door to Phantomille not the Klonoa Heroes one, that one he did beat. While Klonoa managed to fight his way out of stomach when he got vored (gross) by targeting dream gems inside his body, and did also deal the killing blow by firing Huepow at max power, he had to be severely worn down by the Moon Kingdom’s cannons twice to even get him to that point. Primarily since the cannons had a sealing effect that wouldn’t work unless they were all fired at the same time. So it’s kinda hard to prove to scale off of this one specific fight, especially since you only spend the first and third phase avoiding his attacks while loading the cannons with inflated enemies.
However, as silly as this may sound, one could prove that the older Klonoa past the point of Klonoa 1 still compares through his reappearance in Klonoa Beach Volleyball of all things. Where he challenges Nahatomb in a Volleyball game… and legit beats him there. Yeah crazy logic, I know, playing Volleyball is that serious. You could also support beating Ghadius who had previously fought a 100 day war with the Moon Kingdom in the past would give further credibility to scaling to the Dream Prism.
Joka survives an explosion that made a mushroom cloud bigger than these mountains (5.78 Kilotons of TNT, Small Town)
Ghadius quickly obscures the planet of Phantomille with nightmare waves generated by a solar eclipse after getting the Moon Pendant (106 Yottatons of TNT, Large Planet)
Ghadius could bring Klonoa to another space/void with his ability to manipulate and create dimensions from the “World of Darkness” inside his body, and within it lies a vast world of stars. (1.916 Kilofoe, Solar System.)
The Moon Kingdom of Cress was able to create Phantomille by shaping and breaking down the energy of forgotten dreams through the Dream Prism, the very source of the World of Dreams that encompasses the world and all existence, potentially even including all worlds. (Planet - Universal+ - Multi??? Before The Verdicts)
If he wasn’t stopped Nahatomb would have consumed all dreams and nightmares of Phantomille, returning everything to nothing due to a lack of materials (Before the Verdicts)
Nahatomb (Klonoa Heroes) at his wake created a massive fog over the moon, shaking a moon base (44.5 - 155.21 Megatons of TNT, City/Mountain Level accounting for different shots of the Moon Base)
The four spirits sealed the Mirror Spirit, which could increase the sun to make it twice its size (0.18218 FOE, Large Star Level)
NiGHTS
Visitors & Nightopians
NiGHTS has always shared their powers with the Visitors to fight the Nightmaren when they were in trouble, and do possess the same kind of Courage Ideya that they do… so any feats they can accomplish is something that an unsealed NiGHTS could also do. Pians are also fodder given their pacifistic nature make them prone to being captured by the Nightmarens, so NiGHTS should upscale given they regularly save their asses.
Claris and Elliot could recreate all of Twin Seeds with the combined power of their Ideya, which has stars in it. (1.916 Kilofoe, Solar System., Potentially Universal+.)
Despite having their four Ideya taken away, which would have made their Nightopias disappear, the Courage Ideya was enough to prevent the dream worlds of Elliot and Claris from vanishing. (MSS - 3x Universal+ accounting for the average numbers of dreams per visitor)
Elliot and Claris fly to the clouds after literally falling off (122.5831 m/s, Subsonic)
Nightopians can recreate the happy memories inside the consciousness of dreamers to manifest them as separate Nightopias, real dream worlds that are adjacent to three-dimensional spaces that are connected by dream gates. Many of these worlds contain beautiful environments from mountains and seas that both extend pretty far to cosmic bodies like moons and suns that shine you down with genuine warm sunlight, and even potentially universes with starry skies.
Likewise, Visitors with their Ideya of Courage are capable of pulling off the same. Will and Helen are capable of bringing entire dream worlds as Dream Gates as the Ideya created Nightopia. And the consciousness of Visitors are stated to be able to create Nightopias too.
A Nightopian bridges the ever closing gap between the Waking World and Nightopia, though the distance is unknown [AC]
Elliot and Claris defeated Wizeman after fusing with NiGHTS, causing his entire reality merge to be undone (Low Multiversal) [AC]
Wizeman and Nightmarens
From the very moment of their creation NiGHTS was already right at the top of the Nightmaren hierarchy of power in the NiGHTS universe, considering that we know Wizeman’s creations were designated from Level 3, 2, and 1 based on how much lifeforce was put into each. And NiGHTS was a Level 1. Making them more than strong enough to easily make quick work of lower level Nightmarens like Jackle or Gilwing, and they have even defeated Reala, their rival who was equal in abilities to them as a Level 1.
When it comes to Wizeman… that’s where things get tricky at first. By themselves, no way they could stand a chance against Wizeman given they’ve been subject to the combo of being his punching bag in the past followed by imprisoning their ass with sealing. However, by collecting all Ideyas and dualizing with the Visitors Elliot and Claris they were able to fight Wizeman and eventually defeat him by breaking his barriers. Later on, NiGHTS pulled the same kind of thing with another pair of Visitors called Will and Helen by dualizing with the both of them, and NiGHTS has stated prior that both the Ideya and Dualization would be necessary to defeat him. So while NiGHTS’s base shouldn’t scale to Wizeman, they have proven that with the Visitors they are greater than the sum of their parts.
Second-Level Nightmarens can create their own worlds, which take place in Nightmare. Showcasing multiple impressive feats of cosmic creation:
Chameleon can pull people into an infinite space between spaces with his ability to create space and hide in distortions
Cerberus, Girania and Bonama’s own spaces are shown to contain moons.
Both Reala’s and Gilwing’s own nightmare worlds have shown to create many stars, suns and nebulae
Reala was once able to charge a bomb with NiGHTS’s own life energy, which destroyed the top of Twin Seeds [AC]
Wizeman’s power is enough to cause natural disasters across Nightopia
Wizeman created Nightmare when the Night Dimension was empty, a realm that contains all of the bad dreams of humanity. And he has stated anything if he dies all of Nightmare and his creations go with him. (Low Multiversal - Multiversal. Before The Verdicts)
In his fights against NiGHTS Wizeman could create and control one of four worlds at a time to unleash attacks tailored to them, some of them being rich environments like a snowy mountain, the dark sea where a storm constantly rages or even spawning a universe on two different occasions, showcasing enough detail to recreate “the vast expanseness of outer space” including whole planets and starry skies. (4x Universal)
Wizeman planned to use the red dream energy of Elliot and Claris to tear open the fabric of reality using a rip in reality and initiate a convergence that would merge the dimensions of the Waking World and Nightopia. Turning the galaxy, the universe and all of reality – into dreams, plunging the entire universe into a big realm of nightmares, and we know that both worlds have their own flow of time. (Low Multiversal) [AC]
Weaknesses
Klonoa
As courageous and brave as Klonoa may be, even he has his own personal traumas to overcome. He has an extreme case of Aquaphobia and is completely incapable of swimming under or around any body of water without the aid of other people or diving equipment. Furthermore, while Klonoa isn’t stupid (unless you count the awful manga) given he’s an excellent puzzle solver and has overcome many enemies in the past by aiming at weak points, his good nature has led him to being tricked a couple of times by people with more wits like Leorina and Guntz.
It’s also inconsistent on what the Wind Ring can inflate from what’s been shown, while it has shown to inflate solid surfaces like armor or buildings in alternate mediums like comics or manga there’s been other times where it hasn’t. Specific enemies that have some form of empowered immortality such as the Death Moo or use armor and shields have shown to negate or repel it. Likewise, enemies that are physically far stronger than Klonoa have consistently shaken off his wind power, implying that in order for Klonoa to inflate enemies he must be comparable enough to harm them. And it’s not like Klonoa himself is immune to his wind blasts despite being able to control wind.
While this isn’t a weakness by the time of Dream Champ Tournament since Klonoa can power it by himself, if the Wind Ring is being powered by someone else it can tire them out with each use and potentially tire them.
NiGHTS
If there’s one thing that consistently menaces NiGHTS throughout the entire series, it’s sealing. Throughout most games in the series, the Nightmaren often has their powers sealed by entities like Wizeman or Reala, requiring the help of one of the humans to break free from the NiGHTS capture cage. This even happens in the damn storybook. If they’re sealed, NiGHTS will need the help of a human to Dualize with them in order to even use their powers and break free.
Dualization is also not without its faults. If their powers are sealed, NiGHTS must consistently use the Ideya Palace in order to keep their five minute Dualization time going, otherwise they separate and the Visitor will need to get back to the Ideya Palace to assimilate with NiGHTS, leaving them potentially subject to being woken up in the real world by the Egg Clocks. And attacks that are much stronger than them can also overload this connection. It should also be noted that Dualization is based on the bonds and trust that NiGHTS has with a Visitor, a much smarter opponent could exploit this weakness and trick the Visitor into doubting this bond, causing them to split off. Fear is also something that plagues Visitors into losing their powers just like it does to NiGHTS… though courage from the Red Ideya and the assistance of another Visitor can make these powers return.
The Archie Comics also give NiGHTS a fair amount of weaknesses that their mainline self does not share. NiGHTS is unable to stay in the Waking World for too long, or they will slowly grow weaker and lose the ability to use their powers. Eventually, they run the risk of being completely erased if they don’t return to the world of dreams.
Before The Verdicts
Cosmologies
Klonoa’s cosmology
Bear with us in mind that this section may contain some headcanon from the few information bits we get about Klonoa’s worlds due to the intentional vagueness of this series, so without further ado, let’s start with one simple question…
What exactly is a “Dream?” within the context of Klonoa?
A common point of contention and often confusion is whether or not the worlds that Klonoa travels to across the series like Lunatea, Phantomille or the Empire of Julius are literal dreams to show as further proof of universe sized dreams worlds, since they contain celestial bodies like suns to moons and stars, and the series doesn’t like to dwell on the subject of where these worlds are in relation to each other outside of hints. Our first clue to these hints have Klonoa at the beginning of games drop brief poems about his experiences of travelling throughout these worlds as “dreams” from his perspective with only faint memories of what happened, presumably right after the post credits of Klonoa 1 and 2 where he wakes up “in the real world.” The Noctis Sol comic also has him state his dreams as becoming adventures, so some have pushed a few arguments (including myself) to push these worlds as being dream worlds and to be fair, it’s not absolutely the worst assumption to make.
The problem is that Klonoa is somewhat of an unreliable narrator. The Famitsu guidebook for Door to Phantomille has him say he can’t really tell the difference between his dreams and reality ever since he was born, especially since he says that it’ll take some time to accept this world as reality since it depends on the perspective of what someone perceives as dream or reality and feels strange to dismiss it as just a dream, since Phantomille was undoubtedly real. Additionally in the sequel when Lolo and Popka referred to him as the Dream Traveller he had no clue as to what they were talking about whatsoever, though it’s implied he did eventually remember Huepow by the ending, not to mention that Lunatea as a world has barely much to do with dreams or even dream energy whatsoever outside of Noctis Sol. So it’s clear that we shouldn’t take Klonoa by his word since he very frequently forgets and interprets things as dreams.
Likewise… Julius’s dream world recreating all of his empire is weird given its somewhat open ended on whether or not the game’s events were a dream, at first. While yes, he claimed that Klonoa travelled across his dreams and nightmares to show him why rejecting dreams was a bad thing. It’s entirely within the realm of possibility that after Julius fell unconscious Klonoa gave the illusion that the whole thing didn’t happen by putting him back on his throne while he was knocked out. Sounds familiar, right? it might sound far fetched from just this alone, but when you put the context of other bosses it all lines up. Several bosses in the game testify to having good dreams while they were being turned into monsters in a similar fashion to Julius forgetting, and Huepow even mentions that Dr. Medis’s own dream influenced him to unintentionally poison an entire village while he was unaware as to what he was doing. To top it off, the existence of one character in later entries could throw off the whole dream recreation argument entirely. In the follow-up to this spin off Dream Champ Tournament, it’s mentioned that Chipple looked up to Klonoa like his big bro because of how he saved him in the past which fully confirms that these events definitely did happen. With all this in mind, it’s entirely impossible for Julius’s empire to just be a dream world for these reasons alone.
So where exactly does that leave us? What are dreams in this case? Well, according to series co-creator Hideo Yoshizawa after waking up one day he remembers wondering where dreams went after you forgot them he came up with the idea of dreams being gathered as energy to manifest a realm literally made of dreams, and that without them the world would disappear. Setting up the foundations for creating Phantomille. In the final game, this is carried over in the form of Phantomille being constantly maintained by the Dream Prism, a nexus where the energy of dreams is gathered and broken down before being spread as the source that shapes everything as we see it. Ghadius planned to counteract this by spreading Nightmare energy across everywhere to drown the world in a sea of nightmares with the appearance of Nahatomb, eventually making it vanish from the lack of dream energy… or just Nahatomb eating it all.
This is also consistent with some of the other series showings about dreams being energy from people’s dream worlds, the artists in Moonlight Museum were capable of returning the moon to orbit and making it much bigger with their art and dreams being poured into the thing. Which does give consistency to dream energy being able to create celestial bodies in worlds outside of dreams, and Tenebrae Hue used the energy of those dream worlds from Noctis Sol, a Night-Sun that contains the energy of a millions of dream worlds across time and space to power his inter-dimensional portals. Hell, this comic also supports the notion that worlds like Phantomille and Lunatea are separate from the dream worlds in Noctis Sol considering that Klonoa’s connection with Lolo wpas able to bring her back to her reality after being stuck in a nightmare.
So to sum up with these findings in mind, we argue that:
Klonoa and by extension several other characters are often shown to be unreliable narrators due to often forgetting or misinterpreting several events as dreams, something that Klonoa frequently admits himself in a few guidebooks and it’s likely that more than anything else his dreaming is just a form of reality travel.
The dream worlds that we see in Noctis-Sol are very much separate from worlds like Lunatea or the Empire of Jilius and those realms shouldn’t be used as a representative of the average dream world, and more accurately would be real worlds. Phantomille is also its own special unique case considering it’s literally only its own world made of dream energy that exists in reality.
How huge is Klonoa’s cosmology?
Klonoa’s cosmology is… mostly left up to speculation, but we know that the overall verse is set in a place called Dreamworld/The World of Dreams where many supposed realities exist to travel to, we’re directly shown that each time Klonoa leaves he exits the boundaries of the reality he’s inhabiting and there might potentially be other dream adventurers who travel across worlds just like Klonoa. Tenebrae Hue also used other-dimensional portals to invade Phantomille and Lunatea, as well as bring many other residents from other supposed worlds.
Places like Phantomille, Lunatea, Empire of Jilius, the Moonlight Museum and the Dream Champ Tournament are also shown to contain your typical pack of cosmic videogame arguments that use backgrounds, like showcasing cosmic bodies like a moon inside a moon or planets with orbital rings, different suns and everyone’s favorite — starry skies! a whooooole lot of them. So I think it’d be fair to assume that the reality these worlds inhabit is very clearly meant to be a universe, you could potentially try to push it even further and argue these worlds to be in separate realities considering how Klonoa reality hops each time he goes to a world and exits back to his reality via “a dimensional hole.” Which would increase this number to five universes, though I'm not confident on this one.
Though there’s a big inclusion we’re overlooking, Noctis-Sol is a moon sun where the dream energies of dreamers gather everywhere including old dreams across time space potentially, until it was suddenly struck by a missile that caused it to release the energy of a million dreams in the form of the Dream Stream, which Klonoa used to ride across different dream worlds. The ones we see however do include dreams of varying sizes: a city that Guntz narcissistically named after himself where a sun is visible, a small boxing ring and a manga styled forest with mountains and a temple; it’s admittedly unclear how big these dream worlds are on average considering that we only see these areas very briefly and we do not visit them again.
Some have tried to push these dream worlds as being universes from this online script of Klonoa Heroes where Klonoa and Pango supposedly said that dreams are universes, but these clearly miss context since dreams are never mentioned once in the scene, Klonoa merely being in awe at the sight of space from a rocket and Pango saying that space is full of surprises aren’t good signs if that’s what you’re relying on. Nevermind that the setting of Klonoa Heroes is not set in a dream world, and likewise, other arguments such as Klonoa mentioning that Nahatomb’s fluctuation was “a world of darkness that extended infinitely” apply similarly here. The fluctuation for all its supposed “infiniteness” did not expand to cover the entirety of the moon, especially when Klonoa managed to reach the center while travelling around the fog; it would be like saying that from your point of view that all the smoke from a burning building is infinite because you can’t see anything around you. So under scrutiny these would be millions of MSS sized pocket worlds.
An overlooked argument that could potentially support uni size dreams is through the artists from Moonlight Museum, their power of art is likened to that of dreams given how their dreams were capable of making the moon even bigger alongside create painting worlds with their craft in the arts in a similar vein to how dream energy can, including several worlds where there’s an “endless palace of clouds” or an obstacle course of multiple worlds that have moon and potentially stars yet again, using them as a point of reference you could maybe argue that this would prove that there are millions of universe sized dreams, potentially putting the Dream Stream at Multiversal at a high end with millions of universal sized dream worlds existing in it.
Does Klonoa scale to all this?
Possibly, but there’s some nuance to it and you could also argue that he doesn’t depending on how you feel about certain arguments, at least to all of it.
Scaling Klonoa to all of this through Nahatomb comes to mind if you think Beach Volleyball and fighting Ghadius serve as support, Nahatomb was going to eventually consume all of the dreams and nightmares which would have included the Dream Prism itself. A construct of dream energy that encompasses the world and all existence with its light, potentially including all worlds in Klonoa’s universe… though this one may be up to interpretation since this guidebook was written before any of the sequels came out and other worlds in the series don’t seem to be maintained on the same kind of dream energy like Phantomille does as previously mentioned. But if you accept worlds like Lunatea or the Empire of Dreams running on dream energy then Klonoa scales to these five universes, as well as the million dream worlds seen in Noctis Sol… this would be putting him at Universal+/Multiversal, depending on how you’re feeling about dream sizes and your standards on Universal feats.
Oh, and Klonoa just outright tanks the energy of a million dreams exploding in his face, which I personally think is fine, but I can see the issue. Klonoa was far away from where the blast began and wasn’t at the epicenter before the missile blast even if the energy did quickly reach him, meaning that he wouldn’t be taking the full brunt of the blast. Accounting for the surface area of where his body was this feat would come up to… Multi-Solar System, which is still impressive but a massive drop off from where this feat initially got. One could also argue against this considering that Klonoa said he could barely handle the Dream Stream’s energy as it began to rise in intensity.
NiGHTS’s cosmology
Now it’s NiGHTS’s turn for the go-around. Thankfully, while their series does have less games to pull from, we do get a lot of useful information on how dreams and the like actually function in the franchise. A lot of it is relatively straight-forward. Maginaryworld could never be this relevant. Let’s get right to it!
What is the Night Dimension?
As alluded to several times throughout the blog, the Night Dimension is where all people go when they dream. What people think are dreams are really them existing in the Night Dimension, which is why some dreams feel so real to them. The consciousness of the dreamer travels to another dimension. Originally an empty void with nothing in it, this dimension is adjacent to three-dimensional space. Some theorize that the Night Dimension is a white space, or a dark emptiness. However, in truth, this world is without a fixed form. It constantly shifts and changes shape depending on the consciousness of the viewer, and the world born from this is the Night Dimension.
No matter how much time passes, this world of dreams will never disappear or end. Within it, there exists two worlds. Nightopia, the land of dreams made from the consciousness of humans, and Nightmare, the land of, well, nightmares. But what exactly are those, you may ask?
What’s the deal with Nightopia?
During our sleep, our consciousnesses travel to an alternate dimension, where our five Ideyas that we carry end up creating a world known as a Nightopia. This power that resides within the human spirit can result in the creation of whole new worlds. That may seem like an exaggeration, but, no. Nightopias are consistently stated to be born from the willpower of the dreamer, and the humanity within them. The Ideya that humans carry is what gives Nightopia meaning and form.
It goes even further than this. Nightopians can recreate the happy world inside the memories of humans, in order to achieve things that were impossible in the tangible world. Aspects of Nightopia are representations of that which resides inside the mind of the dreamers. For example, the mountain ranges in Pure Valley represent the presence of Will’s beloved father, and Aqua Garden’s oceans represent the beginning of life and the symbol of Helen’s love for her mother.
Another thing to note? There isn’t just one single Nightopia. In fact, each individual human has their own Nightopia to consider whenever they dream. The Dream Gate exists to connect various Nightopias together. They are separate and distinct worlds from each other. This’ll have big implications later on, so keep this in the back of your mind.
What’s the deal with Nightmare?
Existing as the direct counterpart to the Nightopias, Nightmare is sort of what you’d expect. Created by Wizeman the Wicked when the Night Dimension first came into existence, Nightmare is meant to be a reflection of the ugliest parts of ourselves. It contains all of the collective nightmares of humanity. All of those positive attributes that were created in Nightopia from the representations of good things in the lives of humans are twisted in their exact opposite. Mountains become fierce and the sea becomes a raging and stormy one. Every nightmare we experience is, in fact, a creation of the Nightmarens, the residents of Nightmare created by Wizeman himself to act as his enforcers of darkness in order to destroy the Nightopias.
Both Wizeman and the Nightmarens (Second Level and up) are capable of creating these worlds of darkness. But they can also threaten the existence of the Nightopias as well. To do this, they take away the source of all Ideyas, staining all dreams with Nightmares.
How big are Nightopias & Nightmares?
Honestly, this is rather simple to determine. As stated before, the Night Dimension is adjacent to three-dimensional space. Nightopias are meant to be a reflection of the world inside the mind of the humans, recreating their memories. As Nightmares are their exact reflection as well, only amplifying the ugliness, it should stand to reason that they share the same sizes. But do we have any examples? Yes, absolutely! Let’s do a quick lightning round for Nightopias, shall we?
Areas in Splash Garden have warm sunlight and also contain a visible sun in them
Crystal Castle’s… crystals… shine brightly with the morning sun
Stick Canyon has a pretty visible sun in the background
Christmas World has a starry night sky
Claris and Elliot recreate Twin Seeds, their hometown, in their dream. It also has a starry night sky.
Already, that’s solid backing for a high power level. But there’s even more to it than that. Second-Level Nightmarens are stated to be able to create worlds of their own, and it also seems like they sustain it, given that the worlds are destroyed once the Nightmaren that created it is defeated. This is doubly backed up by the fact that once Wizeman is defeated, everything he’s created will end along with him. Second lightning round, go!
Cerrberus, Bonama and Girania’s own nightmare worlds are shown to contain moons
Reala and Gilwing’s backgrounds contain nebulae and skies full of stars
In Sonic Lost World, Nightmare Zone, made by Wizeman from Sonic’s own dream, contains a moon, the sun, and multiple instances of starry skies.
Chameleon can pull people into an infinite space between spaces with his ability to create space and hide in distortions
Wizeman can control and create one of four worlds at a time to unleash attacks tailored to those worlds, some of them being rich environments like the “vast expanse of outer space”, a snowy mountain landscape or some sort of sea where a storm constantly rages.
Wizeman easily creates a world full of stars and nebulae
Well, that all seems rather clear cut. While it may have been more unclear in the instances for Nightopias, the consistency of the worlds of the Nightmarens creating outer space, as well as an infinite space being created by only a Second-Level Nightmaren, gives credence to the statements about how Nightopias and Nightmares are a direct recreation of the world seen in the memories of the dreamers, only exaggerated to accomplish impossible things. With this in mind, it is safe to say that Nightopias and Nightmares are universal in size.
How many Nightopias & Nightmares are there?
Another simple question to answer! We know that there’s at least three Nightopias per dreamer, as shown in both games. But it gets really crazy, really quickly. Many websites and manuals have corroborated that there are as many dream worlds as there are people who sleep. There are as many Nightopia as there are Visitors in the Night Dimension.
With this in mind, we can assume multiple ends for the size of Nightopia and Nightmare, as they are reflections of each other. First, the population at the time of the first game’s release, in 1996. Secondly, the population at the time of Journey of Dreams, 2007. Statistics for the world population will be pulled from here. In both cases, we’ll multiply both by three, as there’s at least three dream worlds per person.
1996 End: 17,526,167,202 (over 17 billion)
2007 End: 20,271,926,343 (over 20 billion)
As the Night Dimension in its entirety is what contains these dreams to begin with, it should stand to reason that it would be larger than it. Since it contains both Nightmare and the Nightopias, which are equivalent reflections of each other, it should contain twice that amount. We don’t have any exact way to determine the volume of it, though. So, vaguely bigger than 40 billion dream worlds it is. Hey, not bad!
Can NiGHTS scale to all this?
For baseline Nightmares and Nightopias, it should be pretty easy to prove NiGHTS can scale to the creation of individual worlds in their base state. The little Pians in terms of power level are pretty much fodder for even most lower-level Nightmarens, and NiGHTS rescues them all the time. Even still, the Pians are what give Nightopia shape. It’s their power that can project the memories from the human’s mind and give them physical form.
Not to mention, NiGHTS is a First-Level Nightmaren, meaning they’re naturally far stronger than Second-Level Nightmarens. They, too, are able to create worlds of their own that collapse when they’re beaten. Said worlds are the ones full of celestial bodies that we mentioned before. Heck, NiGHTS is well above Chameleon, who created an infinite space between spaces in their world. With all this in mind, we can safely put base NiGHTS at massively upscaling from Universal+ rather easily.
However, what about fighting Wizeman? Well, here’s where it becomes more involved. It’s pretty clear that NiGHTS on their own is incapable of fighting Wizeman in a close match. However, when they Dualize with a visitor empowered by the Red Ideya, NiGHTS is able to contend with and defeat Wizeman. As we said before, if Wizeman is killed, then everything he created goes along with it, including all of Nightmare. Wizeman also said that anything he made could just as easily be destroyed by him. So, Dualized NiGHTS should absolutely scale. There’s also implications that an unsealed NiGHTS post-JoD has a Red Ideya, but it’s uncertain to draw any conclusions.
It’s worth pointing out that Wizeman only collapses Nightmare upon their defeat, not the Night Dimension in its entirety. It would also go against NiGHTS’s character to let the world of good dreams die. Wizeman does threaten Nightopia on a few occasions, such as shaking the world, and saying he’ll consign their world into oblivion. But nowhere in the series is the entirety of the Night Dimension threatened to be destroyed at once, as that would go against Wizeman’s plan to corrupt Nightopia instead by turning the happy dreams of it into nightmares.
In summary, Wizeman, and subsequently Dualized NiGHTS (and possibly an Unsealed NiGHTS with the Red Ideya as well) are scaling to over 20 billion times Universal, well into Multiversal! Incredible! Maginaryworld who???
Klonoa speed metas
You might have noticed that a lot of Klonoa’s speed feats in his section have been labelled as Debatable for a variety of reasons, as all blogs do of course in an ominous fashion and that’s a fair question.
Despite looking like a Sonic character, a decent amount of Klonoa’s speed feats have some notable caveats to them that went completely unnoticed for a while or even outright unsourced on a few sites. So is Klonoa too slow? Let's take a look…
Julius’s lightning: In the GBA spin-off Klonoa: Empire of Dreams, Klonoa fights a brainwashed Julius who had been manipulated by Bagoo into attacking him by throwing projectiles. One of these has Julius attempt to smite Klonoa with lightning, in terms of properties the attack does come down in an ionized path and guides call it a “burst of lightning.” So it’s probably the real thing. However… Not only does this attack come down at Frame 1, making it completely impossible to prove any sort of in-tandem movement for any potential calcs. But it’s also an extremely telegraphed attack that can only be avoided thanks to the muzzle of lightning that flashes from above, clearly indicating the player to move the hell out of the way before it strikes down. Several guides also recommend that this method is the intended one to avoid the attacks. So I'd count this one out.
Nahatomb’s thunder attacks: This one is actually one of the better ones though whether you accept or not it depends on your mileage. So in the first phase of Nahatomb’s fight near the end of Klonoa Heroes he raises his hand using an attack called… you guessed it, Nahatomb Thunder. Where he strikes down with bolts of lightning all over the place and these aren’t actually frame 1 either, so you can actually avoid them as they move down. Though the only issue is… you still get hit as you move away from the initial path and similarly, the guides do recommend that you begin running tail the moment he raises his hand… so there’s a fair argument that it wouldn’t count as an intended attack. Leaving this as debatable.
Klonoa jumping to space: By far the most blatant of Klonoa’s direct speed feats by literal miles… that is unfortunately screwed by context. To sum up in the seventh chapter of Shippoku Tengoku Kaze no Klonoa, during a volleyball tournament Klonoa sucked ass so badly that one of his literal worst enemies, the dictator Garlen, felt the need to step in by sneaking body controlling chips onto him to control all his actions and earn plenty of scores. However… the device that was used got broken in the middle and the chips malfunctioned, causing Klonoa’s body to careen out of control against his will and spin to win so hard that he shot himself along with nearly every other participant out of orbit. Soooo, this situation was entirely out of Klonoa’s control and isn’t something he could achieve by himself, not to mention that there’s nothing to prove that Klonoa could scale in reactions. It’s questionable whether or not Klonoa could really control this speed even if he did manage to replicate this again, so we wouldn’t recommend using this as a reliable speed feat.
Nahatomb’s eye beams: Nahatomb fires eye beams from inside his stomach during his second phase in Door of Phantomille, guidebooks refer to this attack as a spiral “beam”/”light ray”(“Kousen”) from the kanji used and they don’t clearly travel frame 1, so Klonoa can both avoid and jump over them. The issue would be that the eye laser’s spiral makeup would blatantly contradict some common laser properties like the fact that relativistic light cannot bend or curve while travelling in the air which would immediately disqualify this, otherwise there aren’t many properties to prove on this being legit. However, the Wii version does depict it much differently by having the beams fire in a straight line at Klonoa, which would make arguing in favour of this feat easier. So I'd say the feat is probably fine with the Wii version though not foolproof.
Is Phantomille just a Planet or a Universe?
We already went over some of Phantomille’s story in the cosmology section, but the amount of stuff that was uncovered while in the midst of research regarding how the creation lore and legends of Phantomille is described somewhat differently across different regional versions of Door to Phantomille made me think that it basically deserved its own time in the sun for a full on BTV section.
In the Klonoa: Door to Phantomille PS1 manual for both the US and EU regions, it is said that the reason why we forgot dreams is because they are gathered into energy for the moon kingdom to give shape to the world of dreams that is far far away, Phantomille. But the Dark Lord Ghadius grew jealous of the moon kingdom’s omnipotent power to create anything in the universe and eventually attacked them for a 100 day war. Not just implying that they made the planet but the outer space we see outside that they’d have to constantly maintain, which sounds pretty straightforward right? But here’s where things start to shift a little when we look at other translations of this passage.
The Wii remake initially says something similar, Phantomille is another world that houses the collective energy of dreams from people everywhere to use it to shape the world which is why people forget dreams yadda yadda. But when it comes to detailing Ghadius’s fight with the Moon Spirit and the rest of Phantomille’s creation it’s pretty different, instead being given a more earthly origin that relates part of Phantomille’s creations to the elements that the other spirits were given and to top it off — it’s also mentioned that Ghadius was jealous for the Moon Spirit’s power to create “anything and everything” instead of “the universe” as the PS1 manual states. Which makes it far more vague to ascertain what the Moon Kingdom created outside of just the planet, which isn’t a good look to the past translation… but one could maybe still argue that “anything and everything” could maybe still mean the universe right?
Referring to the original story of the Moon Kingdom as told by both the JP and WII manuals, the WII version of the text seems to stick more with the original Japanese intent as it says that once again, Ghadius was jealous over the Moon Kingdom’s power to create “all things”. Here’s where the interesting part starts, the specific kanji used in both of these pages to refer to the scale of the Moon Kingdom’s creation is Banbutsu (万物, lit. 'ten thousand things') a Shintoism term meant to encompass the whole world as “all creation”/”everything”, though it can be alternatively read as “every manifestation of nature” and potentially “all the universe” depending on the context. Given what we know, it’s likely a fancy way of saying that Ghadius is jelly of Cress’s capability to shape all of creation and all things in Phantomille specifically rather than saying it’s the size of a universe or that Phantomille encompasses all of it, especially given that we know that most of Phantomille’s communities or “countries” reside in a single triangle pattern in the mountains in what’s described as the “World of Phantomille” by a Famitsu book and much of what was physically created was the environment like Wind, Harvest or the Water in the seas by the spirits. Artworks of Phantomille also seem to mostly focus on its nature imagery, and even when we get a shot outside of Phantomille it keeps a notable focus on the planet more than anything else; all but implying that Phantomille is just the planet.
In case that’s not enough for you, the legend of the Mirror Spirit involves the titular character of the story pulling a prank on Phantomille that didn’t just go wrong went wayyyy too far, with its power to double any object in height and quantity with a mirror it created another sun that was twice as huge to shine down on everyone’s parade. Bringing catastrophic consequences to everybody as nobody could really sleep from having a giant ball of space gas filling the entire sky, eventually making the world slowly lose its dreaming materials to maintain it with dream energy; until the Mirror Spirit got its ass sealed and everything went back to normal that is. With all this in mind this seems to push the idea that Phantomille’s existence is tied down to just a single planet rather than the whole of the universe for even just a sun with twice the increased size to begin affecting it.
But perhaps the most damning of all of these comes from that absolute heartbreaker of an ending from Klonoa 1. So there’s this songstress called Diva Lephise who with the Song of Rebirth could fix the world of Phantomille, instantly, just like that and naturally, with such a dangerous ability Ghadius considered her enough of a threat that could undo his plan, which is why he captured her. So we can use her as a measuring stick for the scale of Phantomille.
When Ghadius broke the seal of the Moon Kingdom he raised it to the air to rain down energy from above to filter out all of the dream energy with nightmare energy, its effects were mostly kept localized to the planet’s nature itself to turn the sky dark or making nature completely wither. Later in the ending of the game after the song of Rebirth returns Klonoa to his homeworld, we see that the Song of Rebirth fixes everything in Phantomille related to as a planet from the withered plants and brings color back to the skies again. Storyboards of this cutscene also describe the Song of Rebirth as gradually brightening the sky, regrowing nature by making the plants, flowers and grass regain their vitality, and making the winds blow over Phantomille again and nothing beyond that; the fact that we never see anything of Phantomille beyond just the planet itself being fixed would point to the Dream Prism being tied to just the planet.
Sonic scaling???????
Yeah we definitely had to address this at some point.
NiGHTS has crossovered with Sonic more times than they had games, being by far the most prominent crossover character in any Sonic sub-series; kinda like how Morrigan and Captain Falcon were put in a similar waiting room. But in this case, we’ve known that there are a couple of signs that both NiGHTS and Sonic have likely shared continuity with one another since Christmas NiGHTS and that, of course, these crossovers were done with full creator approval, as seen in the Before we Begin section. So with that in mind, some like VSBW have tried to push that NiGHTS would of course compare with the Sonic cast. Do these hold up? It depends on whether or not you accept gameplay showings, so we’ll present two sides.
In favour
The first actual meeting with Sonic came around the time of Sonic Riders sub-series, not Christmas NiGHTS, in a mostly glorified playable cameo that has no relevance to any of the game’s stories. However, we know NiGHTS’s involvement in the races had made them quite the brilliant gear user on the rider circuit so they must have been quite the notable participant. Gameplay sections regularly showcase NiGHTS being able to regularly keep up in speed and reactions to the other riders while competing during any Grand Prix, as well as being capable of taking attacks from power houses like Knuckles or Master Abis Core and damaging other characters like Tails with their attacks, even in additional game modes such as Survivor Mode that have them fight against other Riders by ramming into other riders or shooting missiles at them with Gravity Control. Their use of the Ark of the Cosmos also shows they’re tough enough to withstand the extreme pressure of diving in the air at high speeds from the Gravity Dive just like any other character and lastly, we also know that there are claims that the Extreme Gear are potentially faster than Sonic is on foot… though whether or not you take this seriously is up to you.
In Sonic’s case, he had to manually learn how to use Extreme Gear since he lacked the skill on using them when lost his footing on a race and lost to Jet. Meaning that Sonic’s own reaction speed must still be a factor when taking these races into account.
The next crossover appearance is in the Sega Superstars intro, where NiGHTS and the rest of the Sega characters like Axel from Crazy Taxi or Billy Hatcher keep up with Sonic running around a city on foot — though this is just an intro and more than likely, an abstraction to represent the Sega franchises here. But this would be supported through Sonic Lost World, where NiGHTS’s flight is more than enough to keep up with Sonic’s running speed even when he’s speeding ahead like he typically does in this game; cementing that NiGHTS’s speed should more or less be comparable to Sonic’s. And hell, in this same level Sonic fights a deadly alliance between the Deadly Six and the Nightmaren that NiGHTS fought in the original NiGHTS game, once again supporting that they’re comparable.
NiGHTS also has access to the Wisps in Sonic Racing: Crossworlds, who are able to give their powers to others by sharing the Hyper-go-on energy to those they trust to become more powerful and frequently assist Sonic in their adventures: they pulled Sonic out of the insides of a black hole in Sonic Colors and with their might combined were capable of defeating several of Eggman’s creations while sharing their powers with others, including Metal Sonic or mechs like the Nega Wisp Armor or that one airship they ate that one time. Since NiGHTS would have their assistance and can survive their energies while assimilating with the wisps, one could argue that they’d be comparable or at least have powerful enough supports.
Against
Outside of Sonic Lost World and the ambiguously canon crossover Sega Superstars, NiGHTS has next to no actual interactions with the Sonic cast that aren’t gameplay-only or basically a glorified unlockable cameo that isn’t involved with the actual story of the games whatsoever so we can’t really count these as actually canon. Some of the other showings used to prove that NiGHTS is comparable in speed are also kinda…. meh, the instance of them “outspeeding Shadow” that VS Battles uses isn’t only just a random cameo, but Shadow starts to slow down the moment he slows down on the finish lap. So NiGHTS isn’t really outspeeding him, just passing him by.
Some of their other showings also don't help at showing them being comparable, they failed to react against Eggman’s shot in the intro to Sega Superstars Tennis and failed to advance in the ranks of the Pinball Tournament against Metal Sonic in Sonic Pinball.
What would NiGHTS scale to?
Personally, we believe that it’s reasonable enough to scale NiGHTS to baseline Sonic stats. No Super shenanigans here, thankfully. While you can make arguments against the two being comparable to each other, it’s a lot more reasonable to us that they are. Since Christmas NiGHTS, the two share plenty of ties and there’s enough consistency between the appearances of the two together. Yuji Naka outright states that Sonic entered Nightopia via dreaming, and it’s as simple as that. A lot of NiGHTS’s appearances in these games were also meticulously planned to make sure nothing contradicted the spirit of the original series. Both series being owned and developed by the same team is great support for this too.
Additionally, a lot of these feats are sort of just support, as on average, NiGHTS mostly outdoes the output of most base-level Sonic characters with just their own games, at least in terms of AP. But NiGHTS is consistently shown to be able to keep up with Sonic as we established, so scaling to their speed should also be fair game.
Sonic shattered Little Planet’s chains (3.282 teratons of TNT)
Eggman’s Egg Robo withstood getting sucked into a Hyper-go-on black hole (2.7 Gigatons to 1.048 Zettatons)
Said black hole consumed all of Terminal Velocity (1.7 to 379 KiloFOE)
Emerl absorbed the power of the Final Egg Blaster, which obliterated several stars in just one shot (465 ExaFOE)
Sonic is stated by Omega to exceed the speed of light
Sonic must run at lightspeed in order to activate Time Warp Signs
Sonic can keep up with Cyan Wisps and dodge their attacks, which move at lightspeed (2.3c)
Dream Crossing
The first and second chapters of the Archie Comics run of NiGHTS by Dan Slott (yes that Dan Slott), involve both Elliot and Claris finding themselves in dire need of help under the Nightmarens attack but NiGHTS could only be in one dream world at a time. In response, NiGHTS travelled so fast from one world to another that it was almost like they were already there, then beat the threat after dualizing and keep in mind, this isn’t some sort of teleportation. We see in a later scene that NiGHTS required their dream energy as a lodestar to locate Claris, meaning that NiGHTS physically flew from one world to another. Making their second instance of flying to hell and back between Elliot and Claris’s dream worlds all the more impressive.
The issue is that we don’t know how much NiGHTS flew outside of speculation, VSBW attributes this as a supposed MFTL+ feat but brings no reasoning as to why nor do they even bring a calc in the slightest to justify it and we can’t use game lore as the comic frequently contradicts some of the original Japanese lore such as Wizeman’s motivation or the lack of existence of the world Nightmare, so we have to judge it by the comic’s own merits.
We know that Archie Comics’s NiGHTS is of course still set in Nightopia, the realm where both the dreams and nightmares of everyone everywhere reside as every dreamland going by supposedly what Wizeman said and we know that each dream is its world made of the dreamers energy that Nightopians use to create from memories of the real world. Judging from what we see of the dream worlds they vary in size in a similar fashion to the dreams in Klonoa Noctis Sol, going from smaller hallways to recreating the worlds of Elliot and Claris where a sun is clearly visible in the sky. If we took this literally as a high end, it would mean that NiGHTS would be flying from planet to planet or to another solar system, but with the presentation of NiGHTS’s flight being mostly set on the mountains it’s far too vague to actually tell.

Verdict
Experience and Skill
The first chapter kicking off this dream match is putting their talents and experience to the test to see how well they stack against each other, especially when it comes to adapting to the other’s fighting style — and they seem to initially be matched in some ways. When put in the heat of the moment both Klonoa and NiGHTS have strategized against enemies by doing the good old videogame platformer “wait, see and attack” technique where they wait for the right moment to attack and then target any kind of weak spots, like overloading them with dream gems or throwing their powers right back at them. Both also beat enemies that are much older than they are including Ghadius or Wizeman, but when we compare the number of games that Klonoa has over NiGHTS, it’s not surprising to learn that Klonoa beats them to the punch in sheer variety of adventures, proven age and greater combat skill.
As far as we know... NiGHTS has over three adventures fighting all sorts of threats of different shapes and sizes saving Nightopia twice and also… saving Christmas, all while definitively being ambiguously older than 6 months. It sort of hurts that we don’t know how much time passed between the original, and Journey of Dreams. But in contrast Klonoa’s adventures have lasted way over several days as implied by day night cycles and he has travelled in all sorts of different worlds rather than just a single confined world like the Night Dimension, all in a period of 4 years when we account how Klonoa grew from Door to Phantomille to Lunatea’s Veil. Giving him 4 years of experience, and likewise Klonoa has faced a wider variety of opponents, even some that used similar abilities to NiGHTS such as duplication, flight and shapeshifting.
Klonoa is also definitely the more skilled of the two in combat, he’s come up with new moves on his own in the past and is also proficient in using all sorts of weapons like a Sword, a Hammer, Cannons, etc. and none of the enemies that NiGHTS has faced are on the same level of skill that Klonoa has beat like the Golden Killer Guntz, a bounty hunter who’s made quite the name for himself on the Dreamworld. So while NiGHTS can certainly throw a punch, if it comes to fisticuffs, Klonoa is definitively beating up NiGHTS.
But to give credits where credit’s due, it’s not like NiGHTS would really be completely out of their element. Their fighting style is more mobile and suited to evading around enemy attacks that try to get close to them or throwing projectiles, and NiGHTS has plenty of decent experience with avoiding or giving a taste of their medicine to projectile spammers such as Wizeman or Reala. They’re also far more experienced at maneuvering environments that Klonoa cannot go at like underwater, travelling between realms and on top of that; being a better board rider all around than Klonoa is with his Air Board with all the crazy stuff they can do with Extreme Gear.
Regardless, I'd say that Klonoa definitely takes Experience and Skill. So point for Klonoa!
Powers and Arsenal
Comparing their power and arsenal is certainly the interesting part here, because the two are polar opposites in core abilities with their own advantages and disadvantages. Klonoa is definitively the more offensive fighter of the two with all the different projectiles, elemental techniques or weapons he could throw at NiGHTS initially to overwhelm them on land. The Wind Ring could literally blow people away and inflate dang near anything: people, boulders, armor, bullets and from the explosive Wind Hammer and the Wind Sword, had more melee weapons. In contrast, NiGHTS could travel over all sorts of environments with their shapeshifting and Persona Masks that Klonoa couldn’t persist on such as underwater or in the air; either due to how short lasting or slow a good chunk of his options in those areas just are and his inability to swim. This meant that NiGHTS’s defensive maneuverability gave them enough room to make way around Klonoa’s projectiles and keep their distance with their ability to fly well over the air, posing a unique question whether Klonoa could learn to cope with such a disadvantage with his other abilities.
NiGHTS and Klonoa’s physical bodies were also similarly tough in their…. elasticity. Both could withstand being smashed flat into a pancake and their bodies could bounce off damage, so they’d be similar in this regard in that they could take similar types of blunt force from each other’s attacks like the Drill Dash or Wind Hammer. Likewise, if a projectile war ensued it’s likely they’d cancel each other out since Klonoa could rapid fire his wind blasts and NiGHTS should reasonably be able to use the same energy based abilities as Reala. They both even had similar ways to boost their stats with Badges and Gadgets in hand or leveling up with Dream Gems and Rings, though NiGHTS’s power growth might be superior if we account for Dualization.
In terms of ranged options that could directly ground NiGHTS in an air fight should they remain on the air aside from a constant spam of wind ring projectiles or throwing Moos, his best bet is using a Jetimo or hoping there’s a conveniently placed stack of Erbils to attack them….. though with their buildup involved to using them, it’s not like NiGHTS is just gonna let themselves be hit. Although, it’s within the range of possibility that the Tornado Attack and Thunder Hurricane might be able to catch them off guard considering the range of these techniques. In NiGHTS’s side they have some decent counters to Klonoa’s long ranged arsenal: swallowing and spitting the Wind Bullets back as energy, throwing them back (ha) with a Touch-Loop, use the Ark’s ability to manipulate gravity to send the projectiles back with a Gravity Dive or Gravity Control and just sending them somewhere else with a Paraloop.
But to be fair to the Dream Traveller, he has some things over the Nightmaren. NiGHTS has better regeneration since they can heal their head instantly from scaling to Gilwing and even return from nothing. The time frame of the latter, however, is particularly weird, because an entire day had already passed. So it’s unknown when exactly NiGHTS would have returned. So Klonoa out of the two had the more defined healing methods through his healing items that NiGHTS lacks. He even has better methods of returning in the middle of a fight with a total of 99 extra lives to spend and even could revive with full health with an Angel Ring. Giving him enough time to, say, stop time with the appropriately named Time Firefly in a total of three uses as opposed to NiGHTS needing to find a Power Panel to even do that.
In terms of how their gear and weaponry interact with each other, it’s clear that Klonoa has the edge in terms of items that directly operate in an attacking manner. Weapons such as the Beam Parasol, Wind Hammer, and Boomerang are much better than NiGHTS’s tennis racket. However, don’t count NiGHTS out just yet. Let’s compare their sweet rides, the Wind Board and the Extreme Gear. At a glance, it might seem like they’re comparable. However, the Extreme Gear edges out due to not only being able to already do all the same things as Klonoa’s, but also its ability to self-repair. Additionally, maintaining five boosts in a row allows them to become invulnerable for a short period of time. This is also not to speak of the sheer versatility of all of the customization NiGHTS has available to them, allowing NiGHTS even more options.
And while Klonoa may indeed have superior attacking items and equipment compared to the smattering of his opponents’ single use item pickups, NiGHTS has plenty of options that simply remove or steal said items from their enemies. Things such as the Void Wisp, which can suck up and absorb items, while also negating attacks done against it, or the Weight, which flattens the enemy and causes them to drop their items. Hell, the damn Nickelodeon ass green slime causes them to lose ALL their items, an incredible advantage in this instance as it could result in Klonoa’s items being scattered, potentially even his weapons.
In terms of surefire win conditions, both of them have key techniques that could theoretically end the fight outright. Klonoa’s biggest one is to use the Wind Ring to inflate and explode NiGHTS into nothingness, which would be beyond their normal level of regeneration without getting into unclear timeframes as we discussed before. On paper this seems like a pretty strong idea, as the attacks are even capable of working on intangible beings, countering NiGHTS’s Ghost Gear. However, what’s worth mentioning is that this is usually done via wind projectiles. If you’ll recall, NiGHTS is perfectly capable of simply catching and reflecting energy right back at their enemies, making this win condition a lot tougher to pull off. Additionally, Dragon NiGHTS is capable of resisting wind, throwing a wrench into this. There’s another option for Klonoa, and that’s the throwable enemy known as the Likuris. By tossing them, they’re capable of absorbing enemies and turning them into balls of energy. It’s worth noting that this enemy is usually used for puzzle solving, and not typically combat. So it’s ambiguous if it works on actual bosses or not. Still, it’s not an impossible option.
However, both this and Klonoa himself are hard-countered by NiGHTS’s own win condition, that being their signature Paraloop. The ability is capable of both sealing away others, as well as sending them far away to another dimension, acting as a strong form of BFR. It also gets rid of significantly large objects, such as the Likuris in this instance. And, unfortunately for our Cabbit friend, they have a history of being afflicted with BFR, such as when he’s forcibly sent back to his home dimension at the end of the first game, or when they’re sucked into a comic world and thrown in a prison. Not only is the Paraloop shown to be more reliable, but it’s also an innate ability that NiGHTS can perform on their own, unlike the Likuris, which need to be found in the environment. This is without mentioning NiGHTS’s own form of transmutation, such as using the Drill Dash to turn buildings into balloons, or like in the Archie Comics, the Nightopians can transmute debris into water. Something like this is, once again, an innate ability that NiGHTS can simply pull off at any time that Klonoa has no inherent resistance against.
There’s an argument that you can make, regarding the two’s support. Due to the fact that Lolo can contain the dream energies from people everywhere, you could posit that with enough time, she could potentially rob NiGHTS, and the Visitors, of their Ideya. This is something that they explicitly do not resist. However, not only is this tactic incredibly out-of-character for the sweet-hearted priestess, the Visitors and NiGHTS working together to restore their Ideya is pretty much the entire goal of the games, and wouldn’t be anything they haven’t handled before, especially if the Ideya aren’t scattered across various dream worlds like they are in the games.
In general, the Visitors are much stronger in terms of support. The Red Ideya of Courage is genuinely insane, granting the Visitors the same abilities as NiGHTS, with enough power to confront and even vaporize First-Level Nightmarens. This would include those previously mentioned transmutation and BFR abilities, or using Blue Chips to stun. While Popka and Lolo are capable in their own right, NiGHTS essentially having two backup helpers with their exact abilities is much more direct than any theoretical, out-of-character Ideya robbing.
While both are quite capable and each have their strengths when it comes to their more esoteric powers, ultimately NiGHTS has the right counters to Klonoa’s shakier wincons, giving them the point.
Stats
Speed
We move on to our penultimate category. Starting out at a smaller scale, both easily scale to subsonic speeds. Klonoa can dodge bullets from Guntz at 601 mph, and NiGHTS is capable of reacting to and maneuvering on the Extreme Gear, which can move up to 350 mph. You can also easily net supersonic results for them as well. Klonoa can dodge and outrun cannonballs at Mach 1.1, and NiGHTS is just outright stated to fly at supersonic speeds. So far, it seems pretty even, with a slight lean in Klonoa’s favor.
Now, where it starts to get tricky is with Klonoa’s faster speed feats. A majority of them are debatable in validity. Julius’s lightning is a frame one attack, meaning it’s impossible for us to net a calculation from it as Klonoa cannot move in tandem with the electricity. Nahatomb’s thunder attacks are another story, as you can at least make a case that Klonoa is running out of the way of the lightning attacks. Being generous towards this feat would net Klonoa reaction speeds of Mach 31 to Mach 50, or High Hypersonic. This would outpace NiGHTS’s own hypersonic feat of eating bullets at point-blank range, which is only Mach 6.7 (shut up) by comparison.
Lastly, there’s Nahatomb’s spiral light rays that Klonoa can dodge, and it’s not frame 1. Results for this dodge get around 3.567c, or over 3x FTL. Specifically, only the Wii version of this feat works, as it has the beams fire off in a straight line. NiGHTS by comparison has in-tandem movements with a beam of light, which get around 27.9% the speed of light, or Relativistic. Additionally, using the Laser Wisp, NiGHTS can blitz past racers at around 2.3 C, or over 2x FTL. It’s still looking close, but it seems like Klonoa has the slightest edge.
While it is a tough call to make, at their best Klonoa takes the speed advantage. Though, it’s not a huge difference enough to be the ultimate factor in the fight.
Strength
At last, we come to our final category. In terms of pure power, both of these dream travelers are no slouches. In terms of direct feats, Klonoa is quite capable. Easily their most impressive feat is surviving the energy of a million dreams exploding in their face! Accounting for surface area, that’s well into Multi-Solar system level, easily trouncing NiGHTS’s Ark of the Cosmos producing a black hole, a feat worth 122.287 Quettatons of TNT, or Star level. But things start to sway in NiGHTS’s favor once we account for their status as a First-Level Nightmaren. By their very nature, they stand head-and-shoulders above the likes of Second-Level Nightmarens and the Nightopians, who have the ability to recreate worlds full of stars, nebulae, and infinitely-sized spaces as a direct reflection of the world from the minds of the dreamers. And NiGHTS easily outclasses these beings, meaning they’re upscaling from Universal+ to a massive degree.
Things start to grow more dire as we take a look at scaling to other characters. Klonoa is able to scale to progressively stronger and stronger feats, such as being comparable to the artists from the Moonlight Museum, who could create whole worlds with the power of their art, including a world with a moon and stars. Additionally, we have Nahatomb threatening to consume the Dream Prism, which contains dream energy that encompasses all of reality. Now, how you choose to interpret these feats is dependent on your own standards for starry sky feats, and how large you consider dreams to be in Klonoa’s world. It can be anywhere from Multi-Solar system (a bit harsh for us, personally), Universal+, or even as high as Multiversal, off of the million dreams within the Dream Stream. It’s unfortunately hard to make a call, as Klonoa’s storytelling kinda thrives on ambiguity, leaving things up to the player to draw conclusions. So we’re left with a lot of these ends that have decent arguments in favor or against it.
Unfortunately for Klonoa, ambiguity in this matchup is his biggest enemy. Compared to their opponent, NiGHTS is simply batting stronger averages. Not only is it much more blatant that Nightopias and Nightmares in the series are equivalent in size to universes, their highest end reaches even higher. The lore pertaining to the Night Dimension is simply explained in a clearer manner, and that’s advantageous, as we know for a fact that they’re meant to be direct reflections of the real world. Defeating Wizeman causes Nightmare to collapse in its entirety, a dimension made up of the residual bad dreams of humanity. There are as many dream worlds in Nightmare and Nightopia as there are humans. As we established in the cosmology section, that’s a feat over 20 billion times Universal, well into Multiversal.
It’s at this point where we start to see an unfortunate pattern take place. Regardless of the end you can make for Klonoa, NiGHTS simply has stronger arguments not just for matching that level, but surpassing it. MSS and Uni+ ends? NiGHTS is so much stronger than average Nightopians and Second-Level Nightmarens that they easily upscale from that level. Their max possible Multiversal ends? Even if you scale Klonoa to the million dreams within the Dream Stream and assume all of them are universal in size, giving him the most leeway you can muster… NiGHTS’s feat is still over 20,000 times stronger than even that, and even with his impressive growth in power from training it’s not like Klonoa could ever close that strength gap since he’s never shown to do it in the midst of a fight.
This also throws a wrench into some of Klonoa’s options that we mentioned in the ability section. If you’ll recall, the Wind Ring is shown to have difficulty or outright failing to inflate and explode stronger foes or ones with higher durability, requiring different methods to get around it. Not to mention, it has consistently shown to be able to backfire on Klonoa. If NiGHTS is strong enough to withstand the Wind Bullets, nothing is stopping them from using their attack and energy redirection to simply throw it back.
All in all, the more defined lore surrounding the Night Dimension is a lot more clear-cut than the World of Dreams. With this in mind, NiGHTS handily takes Strength, and the final category along with it.
Summary
Klonoa
(“Lolo… I may leave this world… But we’ll always be… together. I believe that if you don’t forget the sadness of this moment, we’ll always be… together.”)
Advantages:
Slightly faster
Far more experienced and skilled
Superior arsenal in terms of immediate combat use, including healing health/status effect items and up to 99 lives…
Can use time stop up to three times and as an on-hand item
Resists being put to sleep by the Nightopians
Wind Ring counters intangibility from Ghost Gear Part
Lolo could potentially take away the Ideya…
Disadvantages:
Far weaker in power, regardless of end
Mobility options are inferior
Cannot follow NiGHTS into specific environments without special equipment, least of all water.
Has a sad history of being BFR’d
…But all of his items can be lost or stolen thanks to NiGHTS’s items

NiGHTS
Advantages:
Much stronger, regardless of which end you choose
Flight grants NiGHTS far superior mobility
Shapeshifting allows them to traverse areas Klonoa cannot without equipment, most of all underwater
Has multiple methods of countering Klonoa’s wind projectiles, including simple reflection, sending them elsewhere with a Paraloop, or powering through it as the air-resistant Dragon NiGHTS
Paraloop can also simply BFR Klonoa himself
Extreme Gears > Air Board in terms of stated speed and self-repair
Better support from Visitors
Can steal or force Klonoa to lose their items with the Void Wisp or items like the Weight
Disadvantages:
Slightly slower
Less combat experience

Conclusion
While there’s certainly a lot to go over, the victor who will live to dream another day is plain as the night sky they slumber beneath. Klonoa certainly wasn’t devoid of advantages, of course. In a straight fistfight, the Dream Traveller would easily have the leg up, having many more games and journeys to their name. Additionally, Klonoa is also faster, moving at around 3.567x FTL compared to NiGHTS’s 2.3x FTL, and has many more options in terms of direct attacking and offense. Their arsenal in general was no joke, and some options they have would keep NiGHTS on their toes, such as the Wind Ring’s expansion and the various throwable enemies that could potentially seal their fate. They also had a much better timestop, as NiGHTS’s own equivalent was something that they had to go and search for in the environment. And, if including lives, had up to 99 tries in case things went south.
However, the Nightmaren had all the right counters. While Klonoa was faster, it was a difference of only about 1.56x, which is not substantial enough to make a massive difference. What NiGHTS did have in their favor was mobility. Without special equipment, Klonoa was nowhere near as versatile in terms of movement, as NiGHTS’s shapeshifting allowed them to traverse all manner of terrain, including water, a place Klonoa dare not follow under normal circumstances. This more than makes up for the slight speed disadvantage. Much of Klonoa’s arsenal would also be lost thanks to many of NiGHTS’s own items, which can steal their opponents’ items or force them to lose them. Those 99 lives would be scattered to the winds. Additionally, the Cabbit’s bad history with BFR made them susceptible to a Paraloop sending them into another dimension, never to be seen again. Not to mention Klonoa’s inability to resist NiGHTS’s own transmutation via Drill Dash, which is an inherent ability that doesn’t require a throwable enemy to make use of.
But what is a hero if not for their friends who help them along the way? Well, unfortunately for Klonoa, even NiGHTS’s support would give his friends trouble. The Visitors are incredibly capable in their own right thanks to the Red Ideya of Courage, which is capable of vaporizing even the toughest of Nightmarens. Additionally, they can draw upon NiGHTS’s powers to gain them temporarily, including all of those abilities which could spell doom for Klonoa at any moment. Lolo could theoretically manage a way to wrangle the Ideya from them, but not only was this unlikely due to how out-of-character it’d be, recovering the Ideya from all sorts of dream worlds is LITERALLY WHAT THE VISITORS DO EVERY NIGHT, and it’s doubtful Lolo could scatter them in the same way that Wizeman could.
Lastly was their power. While you could argue them going blow for blow at just a glance, a deeper look spells danger for Klonoa. No matter what end you could argue for him, NiGHTS could match and exceed them. The Nightmaren ultimately upscaled from the creations of their dream worlds, with the size of them being much more defined than the ones present in Klonoa. Even if you scaled the Cabbit to the entirety of the Dream Stream’s millions of dreams and assumed they were all universal in size… NiGHTS when empowered by a Red Ideya is still over 20,000x stronger than even that thanks to their defeat of Wizeman causing the collapse of Nightmare, a dimension containing all the bad dreams of humanity. This severe gap would allow NiGHTS to simply power through whatever wind-based abilities Klonoa threw at them, especially with Dragon NiGHTS accounted for. That seals the deal.
And so, this fantasy comes to an end. While the Dream Traveller of Phantomille put up quite the ferocious fight, the Nightmaren’s sheer power, incredible shapeshifting, and variety of magnificent abilities were enough to throw their opponent for a Paraloop. Looks like it’s NiGHTS out for Klonoa. Sweet dreams.
The winner is NiGHTS.

To start off…. the fact that this took this long to actually release in the first place was my fault for being busy on other blogs and being busy in life, so blame falls on me for that part. But I'm still glad with how this turned out. I originally considered doing Tidus vs Klonoa as the de facto Klonoa blog, but after playing the first NiGHTS Into Dreams this hit all the thematic notes and tone as well as the dynamic i wanted out of a fight for him and i kinda hope this convinces people more on the idea…. but without these people participating and lending some of their help i don’t think reaching to this point would have been possible.
